One day my friend told me, "I want to stop it, I want to stop buying bags for the lifestyle that I dream. That is a big mistake and not working for me, I got my lesson. After this I just purchase bags for the lifestyle I have".

I think this says how much it is important to match the bag we buy with the lifestyle we have.

I'm working really hard to do this and have sold a bunch that just weren't getting used/weren't "me"

I've thought about this question a lot too. Even though I live near NYC and do go to the theatre, concerts etc, even then, I don't "need" to use a high end bag and most days I am at home in the burbs and certainly don't need a fancy bag - although there are many people in my community that do have high end bags and clothes. I used to have enormous guilt about buying expensive bags and then hardly ever using them because it felt ridiculous to carry an expensive bag to do everyday errands and such, but I am getting over those feelings. As skyqueen says, I get pleasure out of owning and using the bags even if I don't "need" them. They are one of my few extravagances and they make me happy and these days I'm thinking that's enough.

Enjoy your bags, they make you HAPPY & that feeling is priceless.

I always seem to want a clutch for some imaginary party I think I am going to. In reality, the clutch is never practical for the party. It is hard to balance a clutch, appetizers and a drink! I decided I still need the clutch, occasionally, but they should be cheap! No designer clutch/evening bags for me. They do not get enough use. And they should have a shoulder strap. I have been getting rid of the ones without straps with a few exceptions that are great in totes to organize.

I think it also changes and varies... When I was single in the city and working it was one style ... When I moved countries and where I go out a lot more and in cars I started carrying clutches more and now with a baby I'm loving totes... Something which I would never do in nyc for fear of pick pocketers and things falling out.

I live in a very big city and travel between 3 big cities.
Yes I have grandiose bags like Birkins, Kelly, Chanel flaps, Dior, Prada, Fendi, Gucci, LV including exotics. I do have an executive position and must look presentable. But not too loud so I don't wear monogrammed bags to work or very loud styles.

But I also use a lot my cheaper bags. Both for work and for every day. My favorites are a bag I bought in a small store in Paris for €60, it's just perfect for an every day, gorgeous leather. I also got great gloves from that store. And a beautiful tote shiny leather tote from Zara I bought in Madrid. I use it to carry my laptop. And my most favorite bag is a leather bag made for me in Kipalicarsi in Istanbul. A store owner had only fake bags (like all other leather stores in Istanbul) but reaaaaaaaally great quality, they were making them in the back room. I mean I couldnt see the bags were fake, especially Dior bags, LV canvas and Chanel flap caviar leather, it's actually really scary how good they're, don't buy resellers. So I asked them to make me my own bag by my design, not a copy, and he did. It's a stunning leather and great quality and it's only mine.

I switch my bags all the time, wear 2 days the longest.

Sort of, sort of not. But I'm ok with that. I appreciate functionality but I also love art for art's sake. I'm like those old men who collect cars and have a fleet of them sitting in a garage. Some may be practical but others are bought out of pure desire and aesthetic appreciation. I may dust one off, take it out for a spin every once in a while and enjoy the ride, just because I can. Some may not fit my lifestyle exactly, but each makes me oh so happy. Perhaps because I consider my bags to be a reward for a lifetime of very hard work that is now finally paying off. They are a constant reminder of that and to me you just can't put a price on that :)

For the most part, they fit my lifestyle rather well. I have nearly only crossbody bags, but that's how I carry most of my bags and find them to be more practical than just handheld.
I love a pretty bag as anyone else does, but one key point for me is how practical and functional it is. Because if it's too heavy or it hurts to carry, then I don't buy that bag. Currently I'm working on downsizing my collection a little and spreading the brand and colours I own :)

I wanna be papertiger when I grow up, and carry 70yr old Gucci bags with my tartan wheelie...

My bags were perfect for the lifestyle I lived two years ago, which is the last time I bought a handbag. Fortunately, they are so under the radar now, they still work with my lifestyle. The ones that are more obviously luxury bags - like my chanel flap - are almost twenty years old, and looks like it.

Oddly enough, the only bag I own that has drawn a gasp of recognition in the last couple of years is an old Roberta do Camarino bag.

+2. An important aspect is if you feel comfortable with your bags. There are a lot of reasons to feel uncomfortable (weight, size, colour, staring and glaring from others, cost,....). But as soon as you feel comfortable the bag fits your lifestyle and you can rock it at every occasion.

I'm SO proud of myself now! I saw a gorgeous grey suede tote which I instantly fell in love with. The price point was low and I felt really tempted...and managed to dodge the bullet! I love suede, especially grey, plus I need a nice big tote so it would've been a double whammy. But no. Wow.

The trail of thought that saved me from making another expensive (well, not expensive as in a lot of money but another one to add to the pile which does add up to a lot) went along the lines of: "Oooooooh Jimmy Choo! I love that! I want that! I need that in my life! Wait...do I need it? Yes. Or do I just want it? Maybe. Would I use it? Probably not often." One of the reasons that led me down this path is this thread which has gotten me thinking.
I need my tote to be the kind of leather I can put on the floor, take with my on a rainy day, carry it around town and take it to a restaurant with me. If I had a large grey suede bag I'd just worry over it and wouldn't be able to enjoy it. So I wouldn't carry it much. So I didn't buy it. Yay!:woohoo:
