Hand sanitizer and Canvas

I just have never heard of it that’s all. I understand and meant no harm. I’ll have to look it up. But please use an alcohol based one during this time. Maybe you can put on lotion afterwards to put some moisture back into your hands or add aloe Vera gel.

Yes, definitely. I found one that claims both to be moisturising and have 73.5% ethanol! Stay safe.

Of course soap and water are most effective. I said I used the sanitiser when soap and water weren't available. I'm sure that's why most people have hand sanitiser, viral outbreak or no viral outbreak. I have sensitive skin and alcohol based products don't do my skin any favours. I used a brand of anti-bacterial sanitiser that claimed to kill 99.9999% of bacteria.

I was merely commenting because in addition to preferring alcohol free sanitiser previously for the aforementioned reason, I remember several members here years ago stating that alcohol-based sanitiser can damage the glazing on LV products, if handled after applying sanitiser. It was just a general wondering, since the OP asked about what people are doing now. I'm not using my bags at the moment because I don't need them, and I don't want to risk the virus clinging to anything that is not necessary for me to be carrying when I do need to go out.
yes, you can use a non alcohol sanitizer when soap and water are not available but unfortunately it cannot do what soap and water does.

I thought you said you use a non alcohol hand sanitizer? Ethanol IS alcohol...

I know what ethanol is. If you read my original post, I said I had used an alcohol-free sanitiser in the past. The brand I used previously is no longer available, so I had stopped prior to the coronavirus outbreak. I was asking, as was the poster of this thread, what people were doing about alcohol-based sanitisers coming into contact with their bags. I already said that I am using alcohol-based sanitiser now.

If you rub in the hand sanitizer in fully, and the alcohol evaporates, it shouldn’t be an issue. I think it’s whatever else is in hand sanitizer that leaves a residue but it may not necessarily destroy or damage the canvas if you wipe off.

I used two hand sanitizers on a vintage Recital (small bag, on the back, so not really concern if it gets damaged).

First photo is a collage showing the bag before (top), with hand sanitizer (middle) and after (bottom). I tested with a homemade spray hand sanitizer with 70% isopropyl alcohol (rest is aloe gel). I let it sit for a few seconds (same time for you to realize you got hand sanitizer on your bag) and then wiped off with a tissue. No damage left behind.

Second photo is a commercial gel hand sanitizer that is 60-80% ethyl alcohol. Again, I let it sit for about 10 seconds, long enough to take this photo and to grab a paper towel from the kitchen, and also no damage.

Acetone I’m sure would cause damage, but I personally am not worried about alcohol based hand sanitizers on canvas. Leather, yes. Canvas, no - as long as you’re careful and wipe it off if any does get on your bag.

Really appreciate your experiment. I’m wondering if it is safe to wipe down the ALL canvas bag with Clorox wipes?

I personally wouldn’t, just like I wouldn’t use alcohol to “sanitize” my bags on a regular basis. You never know what the long term effects would be, and personally I’d rather my bags not smell like Cholorox even if it didn’t damage the canvas. I would rather use a dilute soap in water solution on a damp cloth and wipe all over a few times, and finish off with a wipe of damp cloth with water only.

Thanks a lot for all the answers. It took me some time to translate everything. Before Corona, I never used habd sanitiser. I always have normal wet wipes in my handbag for cleaning when there is no water available and now wash my hands when I get home.
But there are many shops / pharmacies where you have to clean your hands with the provided disinfectants before entering. As of today, more stores are opening in Germany and I assume that this will be the case in many more. That was the background of my question. I didn't want to disinfect my bag explicitly. My point was only if I ruin my bag and my wallet when I enter a shop and have to disinfect my hands. Currently I don't dare to use a bag other than the Nerverfull DE to which I am not attached and my Zippy wallet, no limited edition. On Saturday I saw a lady with the Giant OTG from the last summer collection at the weekly market. I don't dare.
Personally, it would give me a feeling of normalcy to use my bags as usual and bring a little bit of joy into the dreary everyday life.
Thank you karman for the test!

For anyone curious, I tried the same thing as @karman and tested some alcohol-based sanitizer on damier ebene canvas and also saw no damage. (Wasn’t sure if damier ebene and mono were printed with different inks or something so thought I’d test it to be safe.)

Maybe testing one time isn’t going to but repeat use?

Definitely. I don’t plan to use sanitizer on my bags, I just quarantine them for a few days. My quick test was to see if I should avoid using my small damier crossbody altogether during the pandemic in case of accidental contact with the sanitizer. I’ve been trying to use just pockets whenever possible but sometimes they’re not enough.

The test I did on my monogram canvas was just to simulate accidental spillage or touching the canvas from time to time after applying hand sanitizer and not waiting for your hands to dry completely - it is not to simulate constant "disinfection" of canvas with hand sanitizer (and that is also not recommended by LV)

Also - if you are using hand sanitizer correctly, you should be rubbing it into your hands until they are completely dry (and reduced likelihood of the alcohol coming into contact with canvas)
