Hand sanitizer and Canvas

If you rub in the hand sanitizer in fully, and the alcohol evaporates, it shouldn’t be an issue. I think it’s whatever else is in hand sanitizer that leaves a residue but it may not necessarily destroy or damage the canvas if you wipe off.

I used two hand sanitizers on a vintage Recital (small bag, on the back, so not really concern if it gets damaged).

First photo is a collage showing the bag before (top), with hand sanitizer (middle) and after (bottom). I tested with a homemade spray hand sanitizer with 70% isopropyl alcohol (rest is aloe gel). I let it sit for a few seconds (same time for you to realize you got hand sanitizer on your bag) and then wiped off with a tissue. No damage left behind.

Second photo is a commercial gel hand sanitizer that is 60-80% ethyl alcohol. Again, I let it sit for about 10 seconds, long enough to take this photo and to grab a paper towel from the kitchen, and also no damage.

Acetone I’m sure would cause damage, but I personally am not worried about alcohol based hand sanitizers on canvas. Leather, yes. Canvas, no - as long as you’re careful and wipe it off if any does get on your bag.
Thanks for the comprehensive demonstration karman!

For those worried about sanitizer spilling in the bag, you can decant into something like these with screw top lids:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042IW8YM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R6L1K88/ref=sspa_dk_detail_7
https://www.amazon.com/Honbay-10PCS-Refillable-Clear-Containers/dp/B078MXLFZZ/ref=sr_1_1?

You will need syringes to fill them though as most hand sanitizers are too jellylike to flow through a tiny funnel (I've tried, and failed). Get a blunt tip one, NOT ones with a needle meant for injections:

Happy to take some small risks in the name of science! :D

This is a great idea. I actually keep my bottle of hand sanitizer in a small ziplock bag meant for sorting beads so that if it leaks, it leaks into the baggie and not directly into my bag!

I read that we should not be carrying extra items right now (phone or bag) so I just keep my key pouch in my pocket that includes my license, credit card, cash. I will carry my bags/slgs once this has all settled. They talk about the virus sticking to the bottom of shoes and spreading further than the 6 feet originally thought. I'm more concerned about those things than hand sanitizer getting on my bags.

Just want anyone reading this post to not panic - always wash hands before eating and touching your face. Coronavirus on the sole of a shoe can’t make you sick unless you touch the sole or touch something the sole has touched. Alert, not anxious.

Good post. Totally agree, washing hands is better than hand gel if you can do it. Phones (and heavy traffic areas such as remote controls, door handles, light switches) etc clean daily with antibacterial spray then all should be fine.

Great comparisons - making me think about getting canvas!

I only brought it up because if it can be on shoes on other surfaces for hours or days (whiplash from all the back and forth on how long it lasts on what) then it can be on a handbag. This is why I refuse to carry handbags when I go for essential trips right now.

Nope. I don't wear my bags these days. I use my grocery store canvas bag (which I leave out in the garden after use), and just carry a small wallet inside. I wouldn't enjoy carrying designers right now.

I don't think canvas or leather are meant to be used with disinfectant/ hand sanitizers. So leave the bags at home for peace of mind.

Yes, and I just wanted to remind not to panic - wash hands, wash hands, wash hands. You can’t get sick from virus on any surface if you wash your hands after touching it, or anything else it has touched: Designer bag or canvas grocery bag, purse or key pouch. Even your credit card is a surface. Wash your hands.

edited to add: everyone is free to do whatever they’re comfortable with. Not trying to tell anyone they should use their purses if they don’t feel like it. Your purses, your business :flowers:

I am sure everyone is washing their hands :)

Anyways, I have used hand sanitizer long before this virus and touch my bags at various times. It didn't cause any problems. Of course I wait until it is completely dry.
I think it is a good idea to put it inside of a pouch if you keep it in your bag to avoid spillage. I have not had any spill after all these years (knock on wood).

Um...no it doesn’t. Soap and water are most effective at removing grime AND killing viruses and bacteria, non alcohol hand sanitizer does not.

I didn’t understand so I just left it alone.

Of course soap and water are most effective. I said I used the sanitiser when soap and water weren't available. I'm sure that's why most people have hand sanitiser, viral outbreak or no viral outbreak. I have sensitive skin and alcohol based products don't do my skin any favours. I used a brand of anti-bacterial sanitiser that claimed to kill 99.9999% of bacteria.

I was merely commenting because in addition to preferring alcohol free sanitiser previously for the aforementioned reason, I remember several members here years ago stating that alcohol-based sanitiser can damage the glazing on LV products, if handled after applying sanitiser. It was just a general wondering, since the OP asked about what people are doing now. I'm not using my bags at the moment because I don't need them, and I don't want to risk the virus clinging to anything that is not necessary for me to be carrying when I do need to go out.

I just have never heard of it that’s all. I understand and meant no harm. I’ll have to look it up. But please use an alcohol based one during this time. Maybe you can put on lotion afterwards to put some moisture back into your hands or add aloe Vera gel.
