Guys carrying "bags'' in US are associated with "gays"? True

In the area I live, anything except a decent-sized messenger bag, backpack for school or briefcase would be misunderstood. But, then again, I live in a rural, backwards area, too, and many of the stereotypes and attitudes here I find repellant. My dh carries a messenger because he needs to carry his laptop with him almost all the time, but he would never carry a smaller bag. As far as I am concerned, attitudes will never change unless people do what feels right for them, so don't worry about the attitudes of small-minded people. If you love the bag you are carrying and find it useful, then it is more than acceptable.

I agree, depends where you live. I wouldnt think twice about a guy carrying a bag..Id probably admire the bag, but its pretty acceptable where I live. You cant control what others think, only what you think of yourself - if you want to rock a great bag, go for it!!!

I do agree as well that there is a difference between a purse and a bag. but for ex, once I did wear a brynmore bag to work. and my boss ( a new englander raised and born, a sport maniac, yet nicest guy ever ) made fun of my bag. I mean he put it on his shoulder and carried it with him...I did not feel offended, but I just felt Embarassed. LOL...well, IMO, once again, people in small towns in US do not really care about fashion, both sexes.. so they would think guys who wear a little bit "fancy" type of messenger bag "gays"....

One of my friends who is a single father carries a bag (not a purse, a mannish looking bag).
His isn't designer though.

I think it's a trend born of necessity.

I couldn't agree more. A trend born of necessity, so why not have a bit of fun with it? Men carry more things nowadays. What with commuting to work/school/wherever. Why not carry something you like and represents who you are as a person? Although, like others have said, there is a difference between a bag and a purse. I'll carry anything that has the word "messenger" attached. If it's unisex, it's fair game. I'll leave the purses up to my lady friends. Although, I'll admit I check them out when I see them, silently though...haha. That's my insecurity. :)

I think some people who love to jump to conclusions would do just that, but why should you care about them? It's high time that guys should carry bags too; just watching them makes me feel that it's so impractical/uncomfortable to not have bags to carrry things around in! LOL

when I think "purse", I think feminine. If it's obviously for a woman, I shy away. I have friends who do it, but they have a looooot more confidence than I have. I think it takes a man with killer style and instincts to rock something like that. I could never do it, but I've seen plenty of guys who can. For instance, I wouldn't mind a large birkin or a hac, but a little itty bitty kelly in pink may not be the best route... I don't mean to offend. Hope I didn't. More power to guys who can rock the itty bitty kelly in pink, I could just never pull it off. I don't think carrying a bag though can determine one's sexual orientation. That's just silly.

exactly! haha. Men have bags, women have purses. It's more a difference in term than in an actual item. I refer to my bags, as well, my bags. I wouldn't ever call it a purse, regardless as to how purse like it might be...ha. When I think a man's purse though, I usually think coin purse, or something really little that a man would carry in his pocket. Men used to do that, not so much anymore though. I just enjoy having all the rights of purse carrying without having to call it that..."It's not a purse! It's my bag..." :)

Its cultural....not typical for most American men.
My DH is european, and carries his "murse" (man-purse, joke btwn us) and doesnt care what other small-minded people think.

i think men (gay or not) should only stick wth bags that made for men and specify by the designer. guys w LV speedy make me
im sorry, they might think they should wear what they want but men cant wear skirt and bra, so as women purses. JMO
