just like in other businesses, some people in ps may not be honest. it's important to be careful - do your own research and be sure before you decide, especially concerning surgery. however i dont think it's fair to label all of them as con-men though as numerous people have had great experiences with translators but to each their own, thank you for sharing!

Then who do we hire as translators if a clinic doesn’t have an english speaking consultant?

you have to choose one in two: hire a translator or just go to a clinic have in-house translator. OR you can learn korea. I do not see a problem if Translartor try to promote them self. they should, or else how come people who need a translator could know about them. It is about your choice. OR maybe you should study korean before go to korea to have surgery there.

Then who do we hire as translators if a clinic doesn’t have an english speaking consultant?

I’d like to mention that there are many translators, available in various different languages, from the Gangnam Medical Tour Center which is affiliated by the Korean government (idk if other agencies are government affiliated). I was charged 30,000 won per hour of translation, with a minimum of 2 hours pay even if they accompanied me to one consultation.

On my first trip, I worked with some of the translators mentioned. But on my second trip, I decided to use GMTC translators and I had much better (and cheaper) experiences with them.

I think people gravitate towards the few promoted translators on Purseforum because it’s simply faster to message them on KakaoTalk as opposed to waiting for an email response from an agency. It only took 1.5 days for them to respond to me and assign me two translators for my consults. If you have a couple of days to spare, I’d recommend reaching out to one of the agencies, at least only for their translators.

I'm interested in hiring a translator, but I've heard that if I bring a translator, the prices of surgeries will automatically go up because the clinic will have to pay commission to the translator. I'm thinking of hiring a freelance, and I'm wondering if this is still the case or if it's only with translators from agencies. A translator can help you bargain the price down, but if bringing them drives up the price, then that kind of defeats the purpose... Does anyone know?

Could I ask you a question? My understanding is that the translators itsraininghere mentioned do more than translation, like they handles calls with clinics, help you negotiate prices, go get you medications, call you a taxi home after the surgery, etc. Did the translator you hired from GMTC also do these things or was it strictly translating during consultations?

I feel relieved to hear that! Then maybe the commission is for agencies only. I've heard lots of good things about Ryan, so I'm considering him
I'm curious about how you found that he isn't affiliated with any clinics? I wonder if I asked translators, they'd straight up tell me or they'd be unwilling to disclose that...

Could I ask you a question? It depends on the relationship you build with the translator. I was assigned two translators but I ended up becoming way closer to the second one. She was happy to help me out with negotiation, receiving calls from clinics and helping me schedule anything if I needed, etc. I did end up going to many many consults with her but I’m confident she would have been happy to help regardless. She never asked for any commission and was transparent whether she had visited a clinic before (most of them were first visits for her).
