Serve 'em right!!! The same thing happened here in Sg late last year.. 9 people were arrested and they're believed to be Vietnamese.

Since we're on this topic... I wonder if anyone of you actually take action like reporting to authorities immediately or take any other crazy actions (like secretly taking pics of the seller before reporting him/her, etc.) when you see sellers selling fakes on the street? I know these sellers will have onlookers for the police so they can make a quick getaway when the police come.

I came across this fake seller a few times in my residential area even after I called the authorities to catch the seller immediately!! But when I read in the papers that 9 people were caught selling the counterfeit goods, I believe that one of them would is the seller that I reported cos I don't see him selling the goods at my area anymore. Heheheh.

I suspect I am uncharitable.
In highschool, eagle-eyed girls could spot a fake at fifty meters, and god save you if it was attached to you.
College and later - the atmosphere was far less intense. But less intense meant that either you got a 1) god save you reaction to your fake bag or 2) no one cared.
So I don't blame retailers for selling fake bags. I blame the people who shell out their money to either 1) be someone they are not or 2) don't know what they are buying in the first place.

I know this might invite the wrath of many members here but here's what I think about fakes and how the matter must be pursued.

I hate it when I buy something off of Ebay and receive an item completely different from stock photo used. For example, I bid and won a Burberry Manor bag from UK last year. When I received it, it was a total cheapo fake ! Apparently, the seller used photos from some other auction. I think its active deception here as I had no clue that it was a fake BUT somebody purchasing a "Loois Voittun" or a "Cooch" from a corner shop in the mall is not being deceived. These posers do it willingly thinking they could pass off their crap stuff as classy, genuine pieces.

I do believe that trademark infringement is bad but I see no reason why the Government (which, mind you is having major budget deficits) would channel valuable time, resources, money and man power into handbags thereby protecting big corporate interests when there are so many other pressing legal issues affecting our country ?

Please don't get me wrong but I feel civil suits/private corporate law enforcement must be engaged in as this is not something that affects the common man as say..drug trafficking/human trafficking. So many governmental law enforcement agencies are cash strapped and are unable to pursue serious human rights violations ! Shouldn't this effort and money be spent on those pressing issues ? Besides, a lot of these big corporations already have so much clout as well as money to deal with it in the courts.

Also, one might be surprised that designer leather goods, in some indirect way do engage unfair trade practices such as employing child laborers as well as paying an extremely low wages. I am not talking about the craftsmen but about other processes involved such as the processing of the leather, etc (which is mainly done in India and China). I have a couple friends from India and China whose families are leather suppliers to some big name brands and regularly employ kids. I have been there and seen it myself. Also, the link between drugs and terrorism is 100 times more strong than the link between fake designer goods and terrorism. Shouldn't we engage in a fiercer battle against drugs then, instead of cheapo fakes ?

Ultimately, its the company's responsibility to protect its interests as well as consumers as fiercely as possible.

Just my humble opinion.

OK ladies, my mother called me last night and said that she saw something on 20/20 about fake bags. I got on the website this morning and there were two videos and an article on it. I don't know how to link the videos but they are called "The Real Deal About Fakes" and "How to spot fake fashion" There is also an article called "knockoffs can be dangerous" Right now these videos are on 20/20s main page ( ABC News: Watch '20/20' Friday Nights at 10 p.m. ), but if they do move them you should be able to do a simple search.
In the video with the lawyer, at the end they say something about there being a bill coming up soon that would make it illegal for designers to copy the design of bags, not just the trademark. I think we need to start writing our congressmen and senators ladies!

When I was in the mall a few days ago at the coach boutique there was a kiosk in the mall just outside the coach doors and they were selling fakes! insane.. that sparked a conversation with the friend I was with I explained to her that when people buy fakes all they are doing is supporting the drug trade and terroists. Maybe not the ones in the mall but the others out there. She thought I was being ridicilous and shouldnt believe everything I hear.. Yikes! I just don't get some people. I asked her if she would buy a fake Sony laptop, she said no... then why is it ok for purses!!

That's it not ridiculous and you are right on that. There was even an article on Bazaar Magazine January issue about counterfeit items supporting child labor..etc.
