Generally speaking, how long must a handle drop be in order to fit on the shoulder?

I think it sometimes depends on the bag. Really wide bags sometimes need a longer strap for it to feel comfortable. I have a Botkier whose straps are only 6.5" long, and it still wears well under my arm. Not over a coat, mind you, but comfy with a tank or t-shirt.

I know this is a very old thread but can you say what style Botkier bag you're talking about?

Oh, another way of asking this question, if you are buying a strap separately, what is the ideal length of strap to shoulder carry?

I like a strap to be the length of my lower arm + one or two inches, around 12 inches in total. This means I can put the bag on my shoulder with one hand and I can also easily get in and out of the bag.
