Funny story: Selfridges "apparantly" sell nothing but fakes..

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

I remember someone here on TPF (maybe the Balenciaga forum?) started a thread about receiving a fake bag from some major store. I think it was in the US, maybe Neiman Marcus? But in that case it was not the store knowingly selling fakes but probably somebody returning a fake to NM, the return wasn't checked properly and this fake was then sold to the TPF:er. I think this has actually happened in a couple of cases. Somebody handling packing and logistics for a huge store (maybe even SA:s) might not be as savvy about luxury brands as someone working in for ex. a Balenciaga boutique.

I guess reading or hearing about something like that can start rumours like what you are mentioning, OP.

Edit. to add: Just saw the thread was started in 2010. Oh, well

And here's a link to the thread I mentioned:

I would be very surprised if anyone actually managed to return a fake bag at selfridges. Although there is a return policy it's much stricter than the US and most of the designer bags are sold through concessions which is basically like boutique within the store. I would imagine it would be extremely hard to pull such a stand off.

I'm sure you are right. I've been to Selfridges but never to Neiman Marcus. It was just that I remembered reading about what happened to the TPF:er who started the thread I linked to and how rumours like these could get started.

As I'm currently not often able to go see bags irl before I buy them, reading such stories as in the link and like this one http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...nese-knock-offs-department-stores-jailed.html just make you a bit apprehensive. And even more appreciative of the authenticators on TPF, whether you buy new from a store or pre-owned. The ingenuity of scammers is mind-boggling.

Selfridges definitely do not sell fakes. I have worked for Selfridges on two occasions in my life and they are very strict on such things. They have a reputation spanning back YEARS and so to sell fakes bags would damage their reputation. The sales people who work on the luxury items are highly trained to spot fakes and it would be hard to run a fake past them. There’s standard things you would check.
