French luxury group LVMH offers to buy U.S jeweler Tiffany: sources

How will the LVMH-T&Co takeover affect consumers, do you suspect? I rarely go into the stores but when I do, I’m the only customer. I hope this takeover will mean better in person customer service and new products.

Hi!

Too early, to call. I think there is a very large percentage of consumers who don't know who is the conglomerate behind the brands they shop with, nor really care for it.

Give it some time, and I'm sure we will see/ be able to point out some changes.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Agree here.. I would say most shoppers don't know the names of the 2 largest conglomerates behind most
of the designer/high end brands..
They are all hopefully happy shoppers..
Tiffany is iconic & no matter who owns a percentage, customers will still flock to Tiffany espically
tourists

Hi,

I re-discovered a CNBC "The Brave Ones" episodes featuring Bernard Arnault.

It's definitely worth the 26 minutes, so I thought I'd share it - after raving about him a couple of posts earlier in this thread.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Thanks for this interesting video which shows some of the human side of Arnault rather than just the laser-focused businessman, intent on gobbling up companies left and right.

Tiffany Profitability Ebbs as U.S. Jeweler Awaits New Owner

"Tiffany & Co. reported a drop in third-quarter profit, underlining how the iconic American jeweler needs a revamp after agreeing to be acquired by French luxury conglomerate LVMH for $16.2 billion. Earnings per share of 65 cents missed the analyst consensus of 85 cents."

The idea of a Tiffany & Co rental/subscription makes me cringe, literally. If that's where they're headed, OMG.

Kind regards,
Oliver

I think the jewel in his crown will be gobbling up Hermes if possible..
LVMH already tried a few years ago by secretly buying up Hermès shares to try to gain a majority. Family majority shareholders found out, and put a stop to it. There were hard feelings all around.
Following this, Arnault revived the Moynat brand to try to give Hermès some competition in the luxury handbag sector.

I remember BAG, BORROW, or STEAL, which was essentially an online purse (and other accessories) rental company. It was a smash for a few years but I haven’t heard about it in a very long time now. If T&Co starts to rent, it would be at the slow and sure demise of their reputation as a fine jeweler and name brand and I would run away from their product lines. Interesting and noteworthy piece, thank you for sharing

I do not see the jewelry rental business model being something that works - cheapens the brand and lowers the sentimental attachment to a piece. Unless the idea is to rent out really high value pieces, which could work but would be an insurance and processing nightmare for the company.

Even clothing subscription rental is weird to me. The cost seems very high to rent name brands just to wear something a few times and send it back.

I am hoping that this buyout will result in uplifting the image and brand identity.

But I hope this never happens because if it does happen then the Birkin and the Kelly will no longer be on my wishlist.

I agree & hopefully Chanel will remain family owned & not succumb to LVMH
There are many customers who don't even know that luxury companies have been bought out
& many don't even care..
