For big ticket items, do you shy away from white gold because they look like silver?

Just to clarify my earlier post, if I can buy the same exact thing for WAY less in silver, I may do so, depending on the piece. Particularly in lines like Tiffany's or David Yurman who are known for silver, why pay extra for white gold when the same look can be had by buying silver? If money is no object, then sure, get what you want. But with a limited budget, do I want to blow it one white gold piece or multiple silver ones (or a silver piece + a cute bag!)?

I just realized that I commented on the thread but never answered the question.

Looking like silver is a feature, not a bug. The only people who need to know the value of my jewelry are my insurance agent and my heir.

That being said, I do tend to only buy white gold for fun cheap jewelry. If I am going to buy something nice, I don’t want to have to worry about plating wearing off over time. Good jewelry is either in platinum or yellow gold.

To me personally white gold never looks like silver in person. Silver never glistens in the sun like white gold does. White gold enhances the pop of the diamonds and they look so luxurious.
I tend to wear rose gold and yellow gold but diamond white gold pieces are stunning . I'm tempted by the cartier juste un clou in white gold . Go try one on they're stunning honestly

I think it depends on whether the white gold is rhodiumized or not. My wedding ring is plain white gold (no rhodium coating) and it is softer and less shiny than silver. I prefer the warmth and softness of white gold plain and uncoated, but many do prefer the shinier rhodium coating.

I don’t have many pieces in white gold because if I can get it in silver instead and save the money then I will do that. However, I will not buy it in yellow or rose gold to simply have it stand out. Diamonds do pop in white gold, I agree with that 100%! I just recently bought a white gold and moissanite bracelet and I haven’t bought white gold in ages; I can’t help but think it looks just like silver to me. But white gold stacks great with my rose gold so it works out great for me :)

No I like both equally.

If I like a piece that is in gold, I will I also buy the same piece in white gold or silver depending on what is available. There’s a lot more variety for gold pieces than silver or white gold especially in fine jewellery.

I do think diamonds look better with silver or white gold over yellow gold.
I also really like silver pieces, they are so fuss free and easy for everyday wear.

I have heard people say this and I think it is fashion-led. Yellow gold is what's trending so I think many people are gravitating towards it for that reason, seeing the yellow gold based looks that are considered aspirational right now, and as a result associating yellow gold with luxury, white metals less so. And as a result you get people not wanting their jewellery to be "mistaken" for silver.

In recent years I've found myself preferring yellow gold too even though I pride myself on having a strong sense of personal style. No woman is an island I guess.

I agree though that nothing makes diamonds sing like white metals. The pendulum will swing back around anyway, this is how it works.

Spinelli Kilcollin has plenty of designs featuring diamonds set in sterling silver, however normally mixed in with 18k gold. I have his Cancer Deux ring which has one silver band set with diamonds, one plain silver band and two more bands in 18k rose gold and 18k yellow gold.

The price of these are very high for sterling silver. What are your thoughts on it’s longevity after having it for sometime?

It is, however obviously the designs don’t only feature silver alone. Using my ring as an example there are also two 18k gold bands (and the yellow gold one is very thick) and premium quality white diamonds. I would never pay this sort of price for silver only.

I guess, as with brands such as Cartier, you are largely paying for the name - but in this case I think it’s worth it as the quality is excellent and design very unique.

I don’t wear my ring very often as I try and change up my jewellery on a daily basis, however it has worn very well so far and is still in like new condition.
