For big ticket items, do you shy away from white gold because they look like silver?

Yellow gold looks best on my skin, but I also have a lot of silver, white gold, some platinum and some rose gold.

I like yellow gold best, but I do wear all the other metals also and I don't care if other people mistake my higher value white metals for silver. I actually love well worn, old silver with some patina. It's lovely.

Actually the silver and wg pieces come in different designs so ppl who know will know which are silver/wg pieces but it's silly to avoid buying due to what others may perceive.

No. You can add platinum to your question. Some of my most expensive jewelry items are diamonds set in platinum.

Admittedly asking a dumb question… are diamonds ever set in sterling? Aside from some melee (David Yurman for example)

I can’t imagine seeing a white metal holding diamonds or meaningful gems, being sterling, which is why my initial response was “no, that’s so silly!” Lol

I expect it’s not common but there is a fairly popular jewellery brand in the UK called Monica Vinader who do have some silver pieces with diamonds in

Over the last 5-10 years, Tiffany has been. Both DBTY, and a few other collections.

A lot of vintage, historical jewellery has diamonds set in silver, even Cartier had some pieces circa 1940s when gold was hard to get. I recommend seeing some BBC Antiques Roadshow for reference.

Spinelli Kilcollin has plenty of designs featuring diamonds set in sterling silver, however normally mixed in with 18k gold. I have his Cancer Deux ring which has one silver band set with diamonds, one plain silver band and two more bands in 18k rose gold and 18k yellow gold.

It isn’t as common but there’s been several examples of silver crowns / tiaras / hairpieces which were set with gems/diamonds/pearls throughout history.

Since gold is heavier than silver, more ornate pieces tend to use silver to make the items more comfortable to wear. (Plus they aren’t subject to the same amount of wear & tear as other pieces of jewelry so the setting is less of an issue)

That thought has never crossed my mind. I just choose what looks best against my skin tone. Some white golds can look very harsh on me while others look great.

White gold is still gold. I prefer white gold cos it suits my skin tone

I bought my daughter the Tiffany smile necklace last yr. She wanted white gold but I wanted her to get yellow gold. When it arrived, it looked like silver to me and she agreed. So we exchange it for yellow gold.

I think it just depends on the style of jewelry.

I never look at other’s jewelry and wondered if it is WG or silver. But funny, the Tiffany smile necklace in WG did nothing for me.

I only buy white gold if it contains diamonds (or silver with moissanite). Otherwise I prefer my yellow and rose gold without diamonds.

Whether I choose silver vs white gold or platinum has less to do with what people think, and all to do with how I intend to wear the piece and cost. For something I intend to wear lots, I prefer gold/plat. If it’s just for occasional wear, like statement hoops, I’ll save the $$$ and get silver.
