Hi everyone!
I love the Hermes leather feel but I am in the fence for my first bag...

1- which model would you recommend that does not scream Hermes and is practical, more on the casual side, enough for a phone, wallet, hand cream and maybe a small book? (My runner up is Lindy but I’m open to others)

2- if I buy second hand, how much cheaper should I go? There are some bag that without receipt are so cheap compared to the real price that I am worried it is because the condition of the bag is really poor. If you have any experience, I’d like to have you thoughts.

3- What do you think on buying a dupe to see first if I like the bag? The issue being that sometime it’s hard to find some bags in store to try on first.

thank you a lot!!

3. I don't think anyone here would recommend purchasing a fake bag.

2. Resale prices of non B/K/C bags are often lower (compared to retail) than B/K/C bags. You can shop various resale sites to get an idea of going prices. Most importantly, get the bag authenticated before you buy and always use a credit card to pay (not bank transfer).

1. There are so many possible answers to this -- depends on your wardrobe, style, other bags etc. Spend some time reading about various styles (including in the reference threads) to get a sense of what you like. You will also learn a lot about buying new and used. Go to the store and try stuff on. Have fun.

3. You won’t know from a fake if you love carrying an Hermes bags because the details, quality and craftsmanship won’t approach the real thing. That’s what makes these bags such a joy to carry and own. It’s not just the style of the bag.

This exactly! It is the quality that makes the bags so special. Have you considered a Picotin if not B/K/C? It is such a fun bag, versatile too. Another non B/K/C favorite of mine is Roulis 23.

A picotin may be a great starter (and forever) bag for you to see the wonderful quality and leather of Hermes, without the major financial commitment of a b/k/c or the hunt in finding one. See if you can see/try one, if not in a Hermes store then a reputable reseller. Everyone here will tell you that when you see, pick up and try the right bag your heart skips a few beats, so you will know!

I always like ‘recommending ‘ first bags to anyone kind enough to ask. Of course it’s very much lifestyle dependant and what I recommend may be of little use but still... my first hermes bag was a black herbag and love it. For relatively modest cost you can have the beauty of hermes leather and design. It was super robust - let me see if I can find a photo. I got it as a ‘starter’ Kelly and the rest is history.

A few questions so we can answer your questions better...

1. Why do you want the bag not to scream Hermes, and what would you consider screaming H to be?

2. How much do you want to spend on this bag?

3. Would you be satisfied with a pre-loved bag or do you want a new bag?

4. Why are you choosing an Hermes bag primarily? I ask this because you said you loved the leather but then said that you are considering a knock-off to see if you like carrying Hermes and a knock off is not going to feel or perform at all like carrying H leather. Is it the leather or style or color that you are unsure about?

5. Do you have an Hermes boutique near you?

I got an Roulis 23 as my first bag and while it's lovely, I wouldn't recommend it as a first because of the price point. I would also recommend a Picotin 22 (good size for almost everybody), the two smallest sizes of the Evelyne (tpm and pm) since these are very very userfriendly.

If your budget allows for it, I’d say go for a Lindy. Otherwise, the Picotin is a great first H bag - very low key and understated.

I’m not sure the Evelyne would be a good choice for you as it has a big H on it - which basically “screams Hermès” in my opinion...
