Ok, a little overly dramatic but I could use some advise/clarification.

DH and I have been looking at diamonds.

My original ering was stolen (years ago), replaced with an anniversary band. Now I want a solitaire again.

Original diamond was I color and it always looked yellow to me. Didn't want to go our of the F-G range for the new stone.

Going to look at a stone on Saturday that is H color. Jeweler (who I trust) says the stone faces up two colors whiter.

Thoughts? Will an H color stone look white?

thanks!

Depends on each person what is white... So it's hard to say because it has to be to what degree of white you want. For some people the color I is fine but for you, you could see the color. If the I was too yellow to you I would play safe and wait for a F-G stone to show up.

Also depends on who graded the diamond. So you never know! I say just go and check it out and decide from there.

Absolutely, if it's ideal cut. I have owned SEVERAL h colored stones. I have owned a few various colors. I am back to H. It's my "sweet" spot. It's white but not REALLY white.

Ask for the grading report. If it's not GIA or AGS or EGLUSA, it's not one Id just "Trust". Is the jeweler local or an online vendor with a brick and mortar stone.

How exciting! I agree that a really well cut H will look just fine. When we replaced my diamond, I knew I wanted the highest 3 Cs I could possibly afford. Looking back, I know I could have gone with a lower color grade, and gotten a bigger stone for the money, as long as the cut was great.

Having said that though, I still don't regret the choice we made. LTL, please come back and tell us what you decide!

My understanding is that the color-grading of a stone is subjective. There's no device or technology to measure the color, rather it is the appraisers judgement call. Is this true?

You need to take a look at the stone becuase it appears that you are color sensitive. For many years, I had a G colored solitaire, I recently upgraded to a larger stone which is I color. Before upgrading, I spent several hours at Tiffany comparing the I color stone with G and H stones; no matter how hard I tried, I could not see a difference.

If her original ring wasn't certified by a reputable company than it may not really be an I, so she may not be color sensitive. I've seen I color stones at Jared and Costco that were easily K's or L's. I refused to look at I colored stones after that . . .

I wear a big I colored stone today! :D Lol!

I so wish I knew how to multiquote reply ...

Thanks for all your responses.

The stone is from a brick and mortar store.

This stone is GIA, H color, VS1 clarity

My original stone was GIA, I color, VS2 clarity

Because of my experience with my original stone, I was focused on F-G color. But I'm being told that the H stone will look like a G when mounted.

Seeing it in person will be the true test, I'll know for sure on Saturday.

Swanky - your ring is killer ;)

CG - I'll be back with a full report!

ame - it's a local jeweler who is getting the stone directly from the cutter.

It's a Crisscut emerald.

And thanks for the feedback on an H color stone. I'm hoping it's exactly what I'm looking for!!

Initially I only wanted a traditional step cut emerald. But they are almost impossible to find with the clarity, color, size (and budget) I want.

My jeweler has a relationship with Christopher (from criss cut) and suggested I look at the stones. Blew me away. Gives me the emerald shape I love with incredible sparkle.
