Everyone hates it but me...

If it is any consolation, my mother and I were in a shoe store and I was looking for a certain pair of shoes with the intent to buy. My mother held up a pair, laughing, and said how hideous they were and wondered if anyone would ever buy them... They were the pair I was looking for.

And, yay me! I bought them anyway. :p My point is that while it is nice for other people to be honest with you, it is about what YOU like and what YOU want to spend your money on.

Your mom sounds like my mom. :smile1: This is why I never go shopping with anyone when I have the intention of actually buying something. In fact I make it a point to never, ever ask friends what they think of anything I'm considering buying, be it furniture, clothes, shoes, jewelry, what-have-you. Our tastes are so different I'm sure I will not like their reaction.

And of course I avoid asking them after the purchase too because I may well hear "Well it's not my taste, but if it's yours...." I hate that catty little dodge.

I don't ask either.
Even if its not my taste I gush over their decor. They must like it or they wouldn't have it. Just cause I don't like it, doesn't mean I can't appreciate how much work went into finding the right stuff.
Clothing - if it a BFF, I'd say you can do better if its a fitting problem. But if its only a taste issue, its not my business to try to sway what they like.

I'm growing into (the age thing) jewelry I never thought I'd like. Example David Webb
The bracelets designed like fish, frogs, tigers, etc. 5 years ago I thought, who'd wear those. (I didn't care to know who made these), then stumbled on his store. Now I love them & hope to get one!

I doubt my friends would tell me if they hate something I already own (unless the item was so shocking it would be cruel not to comment).

My mother is my usual shopping partner and she almost always has a negative response to whatever I pick up, it's so predictable. Having said that she is very fickle and later on she will claim to love the item. It's no wonder I tend to ignore the opinions of my shopping partners!

Oh yeah, same here. I'm starting to look at gigantic brooches and think, "I can see that on my jacket." Love the David Webb stuff, and I used to think it was tacky.

I usually ignore, them, too, but in this particular case so many people had told me they didn't like it that I was questioning my own judgmment.

How kind you are, VLL! It's true that people spend so much time hunting for the things that will make them happy in their surroundings, to judge them according to someone else's decorating standards is mean and selfish. I think too that for some people complimenting their painstakingly acquired decor is on par with complimenting their kids; their eyes light up and you may be treated to a whole new facet of their personality that you did not know existed.

I love David Webb's stuff. Kenneth Jay Lane makes tiger, giraffe, zebra, elephant, etc. bracelets, but Webb's are in their own class.
