Who would hate that?! Bad people, that's who!
I've had people comment on my love for skull jewelry and scarves (I'm an AMQ freak). I've been called "unfeminine" and all kinds of stuff because of my skull/rocker/pinup combo makes people scratch their heads. Others say, "Only YOU can get away with that."
Bottom line is I like the idea of marrying feminine beauty with skulls or something biker/harsh because I find the juxtaposition interesting philosophically. I don't really care if someone doesn't get it because odds are I wouldn't want to dress like them either.
Have you ever bought a piece of jewelry that all of your friends hate, but you like?
I know it sounds like one of those "You should buy what you love," threads, but when it comes to pricey jewelry I always think long about the purchase, and the fact that none of my friends likes this particular piece makes me a little more cautious than usual. I worry that hearing "that bracelet is not to my taste" every time I wear it will make me start leaving it at home.
So have any of you ever bought a piece that all of your friends dislike? How did it go? Do you still wear it?
Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate your taking the time to give me feedback.
I agree with much of what you've said. Unusual jewelry is like a work of art. It doesn't take much to appreciate the classic pieces, but the offbeat is an acquired taste.
Here are pics; click the thumbnails for Gigantour versions. The faceted stones are sapphires/emeralds/rubies and amethysts; the big cabochons are rose quartz, moonstone, and prasiolite.

Thanks for sharing doreenjoy. I think the bracelet is unique and, as it so happens, GORGEOUS. I can't take my eyes off those cabs, they look like they are glowing.
These days, the only person whose opinion I ask is DH. And even then, there is plenty that I own and wear that he hates. My favorite piece of advice I've ever received from a shopowner - We were once shopping for embroidered pashminas in nepal and I asked DH for his opinion on a particularly ornate one. When he gave me a lukewarm reply, the shop owner earnestly retorted: "You're the one that has to wear it, not him." I bought that one.![]()

I can't imagine anyone hated that. I think it is very pretty and has a vintage look. Is it crazy expensive?
You and I have different expectations of our jewelry. I have a near-draconian obsession with jewelry - I will buy pieces just because they are silly or make me smile. And if I only wear them once, that's fine as long as they amuse me (and I can resell them at a fair profit if I need to). I want to be a minimalist - about once a year, I threaten to go minimalist - but in reality, I'm a diamond hoarder.
How often would you wear your bracelet around the people who dislike it? Are they the sort to comment? And would you feel uncomfortable if they do?
I think the bracelet is beautiful. It reminds me of deco jewelry - complex geometry, bold style. However, it also reminds me of a precious version of Dominque Aurentis. Would they quality of it delight you? Or would you be frustrated by the "that's ____?" that you get?
Oh...My...Gosh! I LOVE it! I hope you bought this beauty. It's like a little piece of magic with miniature fortune teller's crystal balls. I could see sitting at a restaurant table and telling people's fortunes by looking into the quartz and moonstones in my bracelet.
I love that! I love cabochon, but I know many ppl don't like it.
My friends made fun of my cabochon rubies I got from my PIL for my engagement. Who cares? I like it and I know they don't have any rubies therefore I believe they are just jealous.
