Have you ever bought a piece of jewelry that all of your friends hate, but you like?

I know it sounds like one of those "You should buy what you love," threads, but when it comes to pricey jewelry I always think long about the purchase, and the fact that none of my friends likes this particular piece makes me a little more cautious than usual. I worry that hearing "that bracelet is not to my taste" every time I wear it will make me start leaving it at home.

So have any of you ever bought a piece that all of your friends dislike? How did it go? Do you still wear it?

Well, do you have pics? :)

I have several pieces that people don't really care for, but they speak to me and I get true enjoyment in wearing them. I've reached that point where I don't give a flying fig about the opinions of other people when it comes to attire or accessories.

Plus, I like to think that I am not a sheeple and don't need the mass approval of the herd. Some things are just naturally attractive to a larger group of people and other things require a more "selective" audience. :)

ALL the time! Lol

My best example is the oversized watch I bought in like 2002? Or so? I was on vacation and saw one i liked and bought it. They all thought I was crazy and asked if I was trying to be flavor flav! Haha I wore it and said to heck with what they think. Now the trend is oversized watches... So go figure!

I stopped wearing it though because it was also a white leather strap and my black jacket dyed the edges. I haven't bought a watch to replace it though. Now I'm thinking I'll go with a more demure size.

Buy it! No one has to like it but you.

My friends have only hated or insulted items before they see me wear them. After that, they tend to copy the look. I'd say ignore the pack. They'll probably follow you eventually, anyway.

I agree with the above posters........to each his own and if you love it (the purchaser and enjoy wearing it then who cares!!). But you've really tapped my curiousity and I want to see a pic please.

I'm not usually too swayed, but it definitely happened with the Hermes CDC. It is pretty gutsy, no doubt, but I thought it could be fun for me since I'm very comfortable wearing bold statement pieces. My feedback was pretty universally thumbs down. Interestingly, I did in fact determine fairly quickly that they aren't for me (I had bought two).... I still think they're fantastic on other people.

I can't tell if the response partly influenced me, but I don't think so--it's just that I also just wasn't feeling them.

I bought many pieces not of my friends' or fiance's taste; however, I like it! My fiance learns always tells me that my pieces grow on him, so he is cool with it. I do not care what my friends think.

Jewelry in particular is one area in which I love it when people buck the trend and wear unique pieces. There are a LOT of things I wouldn't buy, but I sometimes reconsider when I see someone wearing it well. I usually still don't buy it, but I can appreciate when I see similar things in the future that it can look different on than it does in the case.

And I have a pricey piece almost no one notices. And I have a feeling if they did notice it they wouldn't particularly like it anyway. But that's okay; I still wear it all the time because I like it.

I wish you would post pics of the piece in question. If it makes you smile when you put it on, then it is right for you. Don't let others ruin your joy.

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate your taking the time to give me feedback. :flowers:

I agree with much of what you've said. Unusual jewelry is like a work of art. It doesn't take much to appreciate the classic pieces, but the offbeat is an acquired taste.

Here are pics; click the thumbnails for Gigantour versions. The faceted stones are sapphires/emeralds/rubies and amethysts; the big cabochons are rose quartz, moonstone, and prasiolite.

I like it!! It looks much different on your wrist than it sitting by itself. I approve!.. lol...& J/P :p This piece looks like you can dress up or down too.. <3 it on yah!

Who would hate that?! Bad people, that's who! ;)

I've had people comment on my love for skull jewelry and scarves (I'm an AMQ freak). I've been called "unfeminine" and all kinds of stuff because of my skull/rocker/pinup combo makes people scratch their heads. Others say, "Only YOU can get away with that."

Bottom line is I like the idea of marrying feminine beauty with skulls or something biker/harsh because I find the juxtaposition interesting philosophically. I don't really care if someone doesn't get it because odds are I wouldn't want to dress like them either.
