I only have hobos for casual bags. Well, hobos and the Longchamp folding Le Pliage bags, which I don't count because I use them for hauling stuff, not as handbags per se. Hobos are the most practical style for me. I like the look and I need a bag that can be put over my shoulder. I only have three so I don't think I'm overdoing it. I'll get a medium non-hobo shoulder bag if I can find one in a great color (I'm thinking chocolate).

Much as I love satchels on the shelf, my tolerance for carrying a bag in the crook of my elbow is about 5 seconds, so I resist buying them.

I have a weakness for clutches, but they're not used as often as day bags so I try to keep them to a minimum. Right now I have 4, and that's plenty. If I decide to get another I'm going to have to let one go.

I'm exactly the same way with satchels! The few times I've been lured by their beauty, I've also realized I am not a satchel girl. I've learned my lesson after selling a couple that were beautiful but not for me. I have one very inexpensive clutch because my life doesn't really call for them, but I do have three crossbody bags in different sizes because I use them all the time!

Tejas - don't be so hard on yourself! You are amazing at being mindful about your purchases but you still want to have some fun! And having more casual bags when you have a casual lifestyle makes perfect sense.

Lo - I am sorry about your water heater! Owning a house is a pain sometimes!

I am so excited! I have now sold 20 bags! I have gotten perhaps a bit too excited and sold one bag that I wish I hadn't:p I need to be more cautious about my next bags to let go.

Sandy--You sold twenty bags? That's amazing! You are on a serious roll! How does it feel now? I think I have been too fixated on a hard and fast number. This thread has made me realize that what I really need is just one black satchel, one work bag and the rest can be casual, inexpensive bags.

LO--I'm so sorry to hear about your unexpected expense! Ugh. I can imagine how frustrating that is, especially when you're doing so well. I agree with Doreen--really take your time to decide on what you LOVe, and I also agree you should find that perfect red. Don't get anohter black bag--you already have one you adore. This is why I only own one dark grey bag--I have a dark grey BE that I've had for a couple of years and no other grey, in my opinion, compares, so if I bought another one, I probably wouldn't use it!

JXwilliams--good for you on selling your bags! I know the RM thing can be tough; I was sucked in for awhile but I am completely over it now. I have just a couple that I love that work really well but that's it. I have no desire for others right now. The CS thing threw me over the cliff. I still visit the SF because the ladies there are very nice but the bags aren't a draw for me anymore.

Maya--Good for you continuing to purge and clean! Keep at it, but feel free to take your time deciding what is best. What I love about this thread is that each person's situation is unique so we have to be careful not to say that each person should do X. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa. When you feel good about what you have, it works.

jxwilliams, i totally understand the rm "thing." I love her bags as well but i'm trying not to buy anymore because of the CS and bad current resale value. I have a Nikki that's been listed for a month with no bites at all.... so sad!

i've been inspired to relist a few more bags today... i know i still have some purging to do but i got sort of lax over the past couple weeks. reading this thread always encourages me to continue parting with the ones i don't use anymore.

^^^ thank you thithi. Fortunately I do love this bag and as it's my only stam and I enjoy carrying it so I haven't put it on my "hit list"!!!

Hope you can find a buyer for your nikki. I think it's a great bag, I've got 2 and can't seem to part with either one. Honestly, I'm terrible at purging bags!

I know!! Some RM's are okay but I have lost a lot of money buying and selling, I really refuse to even compute that number. And, like you say, when RM's CS treats you poorly, it takes a lot of fun out of it. What's the point of being loyal and supporting a designer?! Plus, my DH thinks MAM's look like "old lady bags" haha!!

I am just catching up on this thread and am endlessly impressed by everyone who posts here...you all keep me focused, you truly do!!!

I thank all of your for your observations about the Chloe Paraty and the Betty - that kind of information is one of the things that makes tPF such a fantastic place!!!

I have to agree abut the RM situation. I am astounded at how poor the resale value on the bags is at this point - when I first got into RM about three years ago, you could post a coveted RM in EUC on ick-bay and it would be gone in mere minutes, at or often above retail. Now you are extremely lucky to break even on a bag, even if it is NWT. The people in the sf are great, though, so I keep visiting.

I have to wonder exactly what combination of factors is causing this. :thinkin: I think in part it has to do with the endless sales on RMs that you see online in the last year or so. I can remember when finding an RM at 10% off was a true rarity!

Anyhoo, I have tweaked my wishlist once again! I have come to the conclusion that a Mulberry Alexa is not in the cards for me, since the Alexa I want is $1600+ (the black lambskin) and I don't see myself plunking down that much for a bag at the moment. (Maybe later, but not now).

I still am interested in a few other Mulberry bags, though. :graucho:

Muahahahaha!!!

I think I enjoy the thrill of researching bags more than anything at all - and since that's free, why not indulge? :lawl:

Great thread!! I just sent 8 Marc Jacobs bags to sell on a consignment site to fund either a Chanel or BV bag - I went nuts last year and bought all these bags. I really like them all but found they were too fussy for my very boring wardrobe. As much as I love stam bags, I just never wore it because I usually hang out in very casual clothes. I have seen some pictures of women wearing this stam looking ultra casual and chic, but I just couldn't pull it together. I figured I may as well sell them if I don't use them and just buy one classic bag. I am looking at a Chanel tote rather than a flap - like the stam, I just couldn't make a flap work with my wardrobe.

^ as my friend says, it's you who wears the bag, not the bag that wears you. I'm sad to hear that you're parting with the MJ bags. I'm such a fan of his work but lately I've been finding a bit disinterest in his newer season bags. I never really got into the quilted thing either... I just listed a few MJs to slim down my collection. Good luck on selling yours, I hope they bring back enough to cover the Chanel tote for you!

red skater, i know what you mean about the Nikki, I love that style but I'm sort of tired of the color I own... I'm still pursuing an electric blue bag, so maybe I'll "trade" it for a Nikki in blue. I keep emailing Erica for an outremer Day but she's sold out... gah.

Lo, I love how you keep exploring these different styles.... at least you're not buying them impulsively and thinking each bag through! Have you given up on the Tomato Day or is that still on your list? As for the RM, I'm going to take a huge hit for it, but I need to move on to another color. I can't seem to stay away from RM myself, and the girls in the sf are so sweet, I love browsing through there once in a while.

I know what you mean about MJ's. I love the older stuff, what bugs me about his bags is that the sales on them really hurts the resale value. I feel it just kind of cheapens them, yet they are so well made, probably better than a lot of other brands. At least the MJ line is.

Honestly, if you want that outremer day, save up and get it instead of settling for another Nikki. I love the nikki, but had I known just how comfy and wonderful the days were, I'd have saved up for them and skipped the nikki.

here's hoping we can all find new homes for our babies!

Ok I purged my bags down to 5. After that I was so careful (or so I thought) to buy new things. However I am back up over 10. what to do now? I feel another purge coming on.

Don't worry; it sounds like you know how to scale back. Is it possible that your magic number may be more than five? Do you have bags that you bought that you don't really love--ones that you can still return or sell? How are you feeling about what you own right now?

Popping back in here, are you ladies selling on bonanzle or ebay?

My bonanzle item still hasn't sold yet, is it normal for it to be this slow? I've decided to do a sort of to do a "clean up" each year... without fail. I need to be ruthless and purge bags which I do not use.... in order to buy a couple of classics which I'll use all the time.
