Etiquette on e-ring upgrades?

Loganz, FYI, there is a $1000 or $2000 in price different if you could find a that is 1.49 or 1.45 carat rather 1.5. The price jump that much. Are you looking a bigger size? If you could find a 1.45 or 1.49 carat that has a larger mm measurement than 1.5 carat measurement, that way the stone still be big and you still have money.

Yes - I had thought about this. I know what our budget is and I would like to find the nicest one in that realm.

I am going to do more research with the links Swanky gave me and then go back to the jeweller armed with knowledge.

To the ladies who have suggested keeping my original diamond...I don't intend to do that, my jeweller gives full retail value of the original to the upgrade; so in this way we save money (as I mentioned the diamond that is in the ring cost $5500 so I will have a $5500 credit towards whatever I select). Also, my original stone does not have sentimental value to me; the setting means more to me than the stone.

I did that too. . . had no need to keep the original just because.

I did what you're doing, found all the info I needed and educated myself on costs and then went to my favorite local jeweler and tod them EXACTLY what I wanted and how much I found it for online and she beat it.

There's an etiquette? After many months of research & talking to brokers, DH put the whole decision onto me. He even sent me across country to view stones alone. The only thing he did was write the check. Glad we weren't hung up on the 'proper' way to do this.

Does anyone think if we wait a few months, till after the engagement holidays of Christmas & Valentine Day, the pricing might come down? Brokers might be forced to cut prices cause of the lack of customers.

I am shocked how expensive diamonds have gotten since I got mine in '01. I'm not ungrading, DH told me to get the stone I wanted for the rest of my life. And I did!

He'd like me to have a canary diamond too. But the size & quality I want, I just can't justify spending that kind of money. Since my engagement ring spends so much time in the safe & that would probaly be this rings fate too.

It amazing how riled up some men get about diamonds & the thought about upgrading. lol

if you're not in a hurry, it can be fun. And the research can be VERY rewarding if you don't rush :D
You commented on marian's {risingsun} ring, she's very knowledgable, maybe she'll stop in{?}
Thanks, Swanky! Loganz, if you would like to come over to Pricescope, we will be happy to help you find a wonderful stone. The tutorials are also very helpful. If you have any questions, please let me know:yes:

ETA: I just noticed that you are doing an upgrade through your jeweler. I did go from a G VS2 to an eyeclean G SI1. I never thought I would make the change in clarity until I saw this diamond. The cut is ideal, the true sense of the word. If faces up very white and I cannot see any inclusions unless I view it under the loupe. Even then, not much shows. It was worth it to me. The cut is truly the most important of the ''C"s, as that is what causes the sparkle, brillliance and fire dispersion. HTH.

^ thanks risingsun!

After the info I have gleaned so far I am pretty confident going to the jeweller and telling her what I want her to find -

I leave for Vegas on the 15th - when I get back I will head to the jeweller and see what they can find for me.

I will definitely keep you ladies posted.(maybe if I win big on penny slots I can up my budget - J/K - I don't gamble.) :p

Lucky you, a cross-country diamond hunt!

I wonder if DH and I move the Florida before our 5 year anniversary, if we would make the trek back to NY to purchase an upgraded diamond.
