When I get engaged/married I want to get just one ring-an eternity ring of roughly 2-3 carats. I like the simplicity of the ring, and I work with my hand so I don't want anything that would interfere.

I had initially thought I would want a shared prong ring with round diamonds such as this:

I then saw 2 other rings that interested me, an asscher eternity and this rose cut one, which really caught my eye:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each shape? Would you recommend platinum or white gold? (I have no problem mixing metals, so I am not trying to match)
I am very petite, but with a size 6 finger. How many carats in an eternity ring would be pretty and sparkly, but not too blingy?

I have owned a few rings from Facets Collection and I have been very happy. I prefer the classic rounds myself, mostly just because they're classic. While I think Asscher's are classic, right now I feel they're just on trend and eventually won't be as popular.

For metal: personally Id get platinum, especially right now with it being lower cost. I think it lasts longer. I am also allergic to both gold and nickel and white gold obviously has both.

I have an eternity band with shared prong setting and love it. I find the shared setting make the ring look classic and "diamondy". I have a size 6 and total ~3.60 (18 diamonds at .20 carats each) carats which I find goes nicely with my engagement ring. It's sparkly but not over the top. Good luck!

i just ordered the asscher cut eternity band from facets for my wedding band! i love the shape, but i have an emerald cut e-ring...

i think it's a personal choice of what the shape of the stones will be... you can't go wrong as it will be classic

i personally think the asscher is gorgeous and very unique, which imo, is what gives it its appeal. as much as i love the round eternity rings, they're everywhere and more common nowadays. the asscher seems more exclusive, and therefore is more special, imo.

I think that rose cut one is gorgeous. On a shared prong set ring like that I would think platinum would be your best bet. There's not so much metal on there that you would have to really worry about the patina that platinum gets and the diamond settings would be sturdier. One way or another those are gorgeous!

Thank you for posting these pictures. I have a diamond solitaire now and I've scratched my children with it, and myself. Now I have to work with patients daily and I'm scared I'm going to scratch a patient. Needless to say, I was looking at wearing a plain old band to work, but these are now in the running.

For your question, IMO I think the Asscher one is beautiful. Good luck shopping and thinking ahead (unlike me).

Just another question-what clarity and color should I shoot for in an eternity ring? It seems it would be slightly less a factor in an eternity ring than a solitaire. of course I want beautiful sparkly diamonds, but I don't want my bf to waste money on something that could only be seen under a microscope!

When I was shopping for my eternity band my jeweler told me that you should definitely match the colour quality of the eternity band with the engagement ring but you can cheat a little with the clarity because the diamonds are smaller (assuming it is still a decent clarity) on the eternity band. That's what I did -- same colour and bumped a level down on the clarity.

yes this is what i've heard also... definitely try to match the color since you don't want your eternity band to be whiter than your e-ring! the clarity will not matter as much since the stones are smaller, but i ordered the exact same specs as my e-ring (color & clarity)

Hi hi! My two cents worth - For catching light to reflect the sparks and brilliance, the classic round often fares better than the rest.

Personally, I like the Rose cut, with Plat setting, as the other TPFers have rightly pointed out, they are hardier, longer lasting and unlikely to tarnish as plating is not required. White gold requires plating of Rhodium which can wear off over time.

Also, do take note of your prong setting. If the prong setting is too high, it might not be comfortable as it will 'bite' into your middle and little finger!
