I was all set on getting the black Epi alma bb so I can use it in all weather…and it looks so classic! But then I saw someone trying on an Amarante vernis and it was stunning! I thought it was beautiful! In a perfect world I would get both!! LOL. But I can only get one! Which one?? Does anyone have any experience with vernis leather? Please help me choose one!

I love both! The epi is more practical and can be styled with more outfits but the amarante vernis is to die for. My vote goes to the vernis.

The vernis, especially in amarante, is indeed gorgeous and it is a lot more versatile than you think. I think it looks chic with jeans and flats just as it would with a dress for dinner. Maybe get the vernis now and wait for the spring collection to get an épi in another colour?
Edit: my vote is for vernis. I’m biased because I own one in vernis. It is pretty low maintenance. I wouldn’t worry about the wear and tear unless you are super rough with your bags (like throwing it on the floor of your car). I use mine routinely and no scratches so far. Water droplets roll off and wipes easily with a soft cloth.

This is tough. You’d prob wear the epi more, maybe. Vernis in dark colors is extremely durable. Vernis is more of a statement piece. Epi in black is a simple classic piece. In a perfect world I’d say get both. So basically I’m no help. I happen to love vernis. I say get one then get the other or a different bag in that material later. You need both in your wardrobe. lol.
Watch out for color issues with Vernis. I would look it up. Not sure if it is an issue anymore since I haven't bought a vernis piece in years.
I have the vernis amarante alma in the PM (bought many years ago) and almost all of the vernis amarante SLGs that came out at the time to match the alma and do find them all quite durable as another poster commented.
One thing to keep in mind though is that the vernis does show fingerprints so if you want to always have a pristine look you would probably need to carry a cloth with you to wipe away the fingerprints. I do this with the vernis amarante Sarah wallets that I have (as I don't like fingerprints showing on my SLGs).

Thank you! I did search and yes there are stories of discoloration. It was surprising how many people had problems. Hopefully this is no longer a problem but I don’t know. I will keep this info in mind. Thank you again for the info!
I don’t think this is a problem with amarante color or darker vernis. Lighter colors sometimes discolor after years of use and/or are susceptible to color transfer. I have a business card holder in rouge fauviste, which is similar to amarante. I’ve used it everyday for many years. You can’t kill this thing. I also have a victorine wallet in amarante, no issues, and recently bought an older amarante bag and the new mini pochette in amarante. The bag I bought is from 2011 and looks brand new. Good luck deciding!
I have alma BB in amarante and damier ebene canvas. I adore both equally. I'm also looking to add on epi. I say save up for both? I know....I'm no help. However, I do recommend that you steer clear of the vernis in lighter colors because of color transfer and yellowing. I've had various vernis SLGs in Amarante and they've held up wonderfully throughout the years.
No one has mentioned this yet, but if u live in a humid country, vernis gets sticky over time if left unused. This is one sad characteristic of patent leather. It happens to all patent leather, even vernis.
Thank you all for your help! Such a hard choice! I loved both in person--ultimately I went with the black Epi. I decided that it went best with my wardrobe and it is completely worry free which I wanted. It is such a classic which will stand the test of time! Maybe one day I will get the vernis--but for now I am on ban island! So it will be some time! I can't tell you how much you all helped me!!! TPF members are simply the best!!
