My adviceis to get as close to a one carat as you can afford for the qualty you want. For those who need a big look and ccan't afford the dia of their dreams I recommend a larger stone other than a dia! Of course, some semi-precious can be very pricey as well, there are soooo many other stones that are less costly and really gorgeous! I love aqua-marine for an ering. A birthstoen, or astrological stone of your fiance can have great meaning, as well as the stone of the month of your engagement or wedding! If you stickwith dia and want a bigger look, think 3 stone settings! They have a big look, lot of sparkleand are quite popular! If you choose to upgrade some day, you can use two of the stones as side stones and still have the original sentiment!

It depends on how much your partner is willing to spend. Also if you want a stone with a very high colour and clarity you might have to sacrifice the size to get it into your budget and vice versa. Also if you have tiny fingers a stone say 0.50ct will look large incomparison to someone who might have large fingers, then it wouldnt look that big.
