Not to bring up the oldest argument on the jewelry forum, but if you want the biggest ring for your dollar, Tiffany's will not be your best bet.

For other reasons (I've learned here), I wouldn't go to Tiffany's for my diamond.

But again, everyone's entitled to their likes and dislikes and bottom line is all of us have a choice.

AntiqueShopper, you're amazing with the resources!!! :smile1: - and quick too!

Oh yeah definitley couldn't go Tiffany's. Everything is significantly marked up due to the brand! You can do better in a jewelry district to find something just as nice but much more affordable. I always wanted a 1.5 carat stone. No need to be much bigger but it can get pretty expensive. I did not know round is supposed to look bigger....

Thanks for the chart and website Elizat, those are great resources!!

What you can afford comfortably without being obscene. Figure out what size, specs, cost are important to you and start looking.

get started on Pricescope and they will give you lots of resources for diamonds.

Congrats on your engagement!
I feel sure you will get a beautiful ring. It is good that you are doing research.
As the other posters are telling you, it will not useful for us to tell you what size would be 'too small'. I wouldn't like to do that, if only for the reason that if I name 'X' size as too small, there are certainly women reading who have a ring that size or smaller who will then feel bad that their e-ring is not up to some arbitrary standard I (or my possibly shallow friends) made up. I have seen beautiful rings in all sizes. some of the antique rings have center stone diamonds that are .10 or even smaller and the ring is very beautiful with lovely workmanship. Also, what if you decide that you 'must' have a ring with a certain size center stone and then you don't get that size due to finances? Then YOU might feel bad, even though you have a lovely ring which is a gift of love.
You can go and try on rings, looking not just at carat size, but at the design of the ring and the way the different shapes of stones look on you and then you will get some idea of what you will like, on you. Maybe you will decide that size is most important to you and that you would just like the biggest size your fiance can afford (with a color and clarity that assure that it looks pretty and sparkly) and there's nothing wrong with that, of course. You should just get it and enjoy. But we can't advise you about that, because we don't know what your fiance can afford.
You should keep doing research and learn about the four C's and all of that to make sure you don't overpay for what you get.
But maybe you WANT to overpay (in other people's opinion) because maybe you will find that you do prefer the rings from Tiffany's or some other high end place, when you have looked at different rings.
It should be alot of fun looking!!! I hope you have the best time. Congrats again and I look forward to seeing pictures once your start your search (and I'm sure that many others on the board do, too).

I think you just have to find one that sings to your heart! When I first saw my e-ring at Tiffany, I just couldn't help myself and had the BIGGEST smile on my face. I knew it was THE one! It was my dream to have a Tiffany E-ring, so didn't care if we overpaid or not.

EXCELLENT post!

I've been doing a lot of thinking myself lately and have similar thoughts. I want to "fall in love" with my ring every day.......and it doesn't have to be "X" # of carats to do so. Besides, the ring is for ME.....not a bauble to impress my friends.

I think if you have an size 6 finger and under, a 1ct stone with 6.4mm or so spread can look pretty nice. 1ct can cost very little or very much depending on the quality of the stone. This is not to say that anyone with size 6+ fingers won't look good with a 1ct or smaller stone. This is just my personal opinion.

I would just set a budget first and buy the BEST cut + Size + Clarity you can afford.

Carat is very deceiving....some 1cts look smaller than others. I would look at the stone's individual measurements and angles and see what looks good and faces up perfectly in size for you.

I think you just have to find one that sings to your heart! When I first saw my e-ring at Tiffany, I just couldn't help myself and had the BIGGEST smile on my face. I knew it was THE one! It was my dream to have a Tiffany E-ring, so didn't care if we overpaid or not.

That is how I felt about a Tiffany E-ring. I know a lot about jewelry, and I know that I paid more for the ring than I would have if I went to BlueNile.com, the diamond district (if I knew a reputable dealer), or most jewelry stores, but I wanted a Tiffany ring. I feel lucky to get what I wanted/

I would recommend a Tiffany ring (or any high end designer) if the Tiffany name is important to you. If the name is not important to you, then buy from another jeweler. Your ring should be something you love. It should make your heart sing.

Black Jade you are so right. There is no right size for everyone. Its really hard to say what should work for so many different people. Well I did end up getting my ring - center stone is 1 carat and setting is about .75 of a carat. I may have preferred a little bigger on the center stone but I know the stone is high quality - great color, cut, etc....
