OP, sorry to hijack your thread with this discussion of odd numbers of prongs. What did you decide?
Thank you so much. You have a good eye -- yes, the original design is from Marc Morell. I'm having a jeweler make a new ring to hold a different-sized stone. Because the shanks form the prongs, the original ring can't be reset with a stone of a different size.
It's not clear from the pic I posted, but the shank of the ring splits and comes around behind the stone to form the prongs on the right, so IMO it wouldn't look as good to position the prongs differently in this particular setting. I can see what you suggest for a Tiffany-style setting, though.

Doreenjoy, can you pls share where you made that setting, so smooth like a Mark Morrell but not sure if he does custom. I like it. It's lovely.

If I did 3 prongs I'd do a 12 o'clock, a 4 and an 8.
