skphotoimages - I am amazed your stone is 1.55ct! I thought it was 2ct+ from those pictures. Your set is very nice :smile1: Thank you once again for the comparison pictures, they are very useful. I keep looking at them and trying to imagine my ring but I can't decide whether I prefer 4 or 6 more!

Swanky - I seen pictures of your reset and it is stunning. Why do you prefer 4?

I am pleased to know you guys think my stone could pull off 6 prongs, cause I am really warming to the idea now. I like the idea of my stone looking rounder, although I'm not sure I want my stone to look any bigger... but if this is something I have to deal with then so be it :p

I have two weeks to decide before I go back to the shop, and I really want to make the right decision because I don't want to be going back down this road again. I thought I was done with the whole thinking about settings and mounts thing after I got my ring. I am thankful though this has been raised now and not after some disaster which involved me loosing my stone!

Will you be OK losing that profile view if you go to a six prong? It seemed like something in your original post that you really loved.
I could tell from the first picture of your ring that you posted that it has AMAZING symmetry. I think going with a 6 prong and keeping it really round looking would go well with it.
Thank you for the compliment on my set. I originally went with 4 prong to give my diamond a squarer look.
I wish I could give you better pictures with the new tinier double 4 prong because I was worried the one I posted would be too distracting with those LARGE double prongs...lol. It's stormy here today though, I'm not sure if I'll get any decent light to do a redo. I'm glad to know it's helping a little as is though :-)

Also, are you only considering the 6 prong or are you considering the double 4 prong too?
If you go to this thread and then down to the 11th post, there is a picture of Contessa's before her redo. She had a very nice dainty double prong.

I have been thinking for almost 24 hours now about whether loosing this view would bother me. When the setter first suggested it to me yesterday I was all no, no and no because I just wasn't prepared for it, KWIM? I went in thinking I was simply picking my ring up, not that I had to rethink things. Now I've come to terms with the fact I'm going to need to have some work done on it, I'm more open to considering my options. I think I will go this weekend to some local stores and look for 6 prong and double 4 prong rings to get a feel for them on my finger!

Oh my gosh you are a doll!!! Thank you so much for doing that! So very kind of you :D I can see even from that how 6 prongs accentuates the roundness of my stone. I actually think I really like this idea...

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to these things and I didn't quite have the spacing right on the 6 prong. This one is better (still not perfect, but better) I think you will see how even more round it is. When set in the real deal I think it will be stunning, and very safe and secure too!
Definitely keep us updated with what you decide!! :-)

I look forward to seeing how this gets resolved, and if you go 6 prong. I personally prefer it, but I know in the case of your setting design it will change the look a bit.

skphotoimages thank you once again! I am really feeling the 6 prong idea now, and your mock up is contributing to that ;) It was hard for me to imagine my stone and my ring differently because it is so familiar to me, if that makes sense.

ame - I too am looking forward to seeing what I choose :p I'm not quite sure how I ended up wanting to change to a 6 prong because this time 2 days ago I would have hated the idea but somehow now here I am?! I really want to make sure I am not being compulsive in my decision making though.

I will be sure to do an update and reveal what I end up with in a few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has helped me so far :smile1:

I think you're right to go to 6 prongs for security. It's definitely more secure. My first e-ring is 6 prongs. with my anniversary ring (a solitaire) I went to 4. But the way the jeweller explained it to me was this--if security is the only consideration, 6 is better than 4. With 6 if you have a problem with one prong, 5 more will hold it in--but with 4, only 3 prongs, which isn't enough to hold a diamond in. HOWEVER, its not necessarily true that you will definitely run into a situation where a prong will bend--in fact, unlikely if you regularly clean and check and the setting is well made. And there are other considerations such more light hitting the stone, whether you like the stone to look rounder or more squarish (I think 4 is more popular now partly because squarer stones are in vogue), so 6 is not right for everybody.

My big question is: Is the ring insured? Against everything (including stone loss or damage?) While most of us would hate to lose the diamond from our original e-ring, think how much worse if the unlikely happened--and you weren't insured to ever get anything else. This did happen to my mother, so its possible.

My ring is indeed insured. I am covered for any loss, damage or theft that may occur. So that isn't a concern in terms of safety per se, but it is the sentimental factor that bothers me, as you say. Plus the inconvenience of it all if I were to loose my stone as it took a while for me to find one that met my requirements!

I guess this has just given me a little scare and I want to make sure I am as safe as I can be in safeguarding my ring and stone and from what the setter said it seems like 6 prongs is the way to do this.
