forgot to add, that emerald is $148,500.00!
I'd go for bigger if your eyes cannot see it, G is totally fine IMO. Who did the certification?
I have always drooled over my jeweler's 3.5 carat she wears, I finally asked her a few days ago about it and it's an I color SI2, I about fell over. It LOOKS flawless. Completely white and eye clean.
What's a piece of paper ;)

Oh, and I am only looking at GIA certified stones so the color grading should be accurate.

Depending on the stone, G colour can look great! If you are concerned, ask to see some stone with a slight blue florescence - this helps them face up whiter if they are a bit warmer (but remember too, G is so faint, it often faces up white anyhow). Congratulations on choosing your diamond, it sounds like it will be lovely! Please post pictures when you decide on one. :smile1:

If you like very white (icy white) stones, I would go for a smaller size before I'd go any higher than F or G in color. E or F in a 2.5 ct might be a comparable price to the 3.0 in G color. If you can go just a hair below a full ct (like 2.8 or 2.9) you might also save money without sacrificing much size. I don't think most people could spot a solitaire and say that it's 2.5 ct, not 3. I think there's a big difference between 1 and 2 and between 2 and 4, but not as much between 2 and 3. People will notice it, notice that it's big, and that it's beautiful, but probably not just how big it is.

Before you buy, I'd ask your diamond dealer (I assume since you won't see it in person before you buy it) for the measurements. Depending how the EC is cut, you might have a larger or smaller face up area. A stone with more weight underneath will face up smaller than one that is more shallow cut. A 2.5 or 2.75 ct stone might face up at the same size as a 3.0. Just something to consider.

You might also go visit a reputable diamond store (Tiffany?) to look at a G color next to a D. I can't usually tell much difference until I get to the H and I colors and above.

My engagement ring is just over 2ct, emerald cut and I love love love it! It's E color and incredibly beautiful. But, as someone said earlier, I have to keep it very clean. The many facets in a round brilliant stone would hide a little dirt or oil, but the EC is so sleek that it shows everything. I'm constantly wiping my finger print off it, or a water spot after I wash my hands. I don't like to take it off except at home, so I hardly ever put hand cream on because it clouds up my stone.

Hope that helps!

G is fine. I feel many stones depend on the clarity. I like eye-clean stones.

You can have a G color, but a lower clarity stone will determine the value. I find anything past VS2 in studs starts to look cloudy, like one of my diamond studs, unfortunately.

My ering is G/VS2, it looks nice and white. It's only when I put it next to my sis' E/IF then... you know  (the G/VS2 looks decidedly yellow)

But I'll go with any color stone (G-L) as long as the clarity doesn't go past VS range (SI1-3, I1-3).

Thanks... perhaps my stud is in the "I" clarity range then, argh... LOL

Good to know SwankyMama, I have been looking on and off but limiting my range to VS, can now check SI too.

Its only I1 and under that should be visible to the naked eye, everything above you need a 10 times magnification lens to find inclusions. If you have an SI and you think you can see something with the naked eye, it could be a little dirt or something.I would'nt like to say you've been sold a bum stone,so I think there is just a bit of stuff on it somewhere.

Sorry to bump but my mom has a L 1ct emerald and it looks white to me. I would think an L would be light yellow, maybe i cant tell since its in yellow gold and not white. No clue on the clarity since the paperwork is lost but if i were to guess ,there is a small cloud on a side facet so maybe VS? Looks like a piece of glass to me.

I was told that G was the mini for fancy shapes due to the less facets and thinness in the outer edges. Maybe H for emerald but not for marquise.

I've seen some very white and very sparkly G color stones. Clarity should be an issue though. Both VS and SI may be "eye clean" but the difference may be the remarkable. The best visual reference I can think of is the glass in your makeup compact or a bright clean pane of clear glass. Then compare that to looking through a drinking glass with water after you added a couple teaspoons of milk to the water! "Eye clean" yes, but that drinking glass with milk might be the look of an "eye clean" SI diamond. That is to say, rather cloudy. I believe a G stone in VS or VVS should look both white and super sparkly because it will reflect light well.
