Ebay - managed payments

I don't think you're "invited." I think you MUST sign up by a certain date. ("Invited" implies that you have an option to accept or decline. There's no option.)

I don't think there's less seller protection. But the fee structure varies.

Yes that’s what I meant, I figured it means they invited me lol!
I’m supposed to sign up by later next month but I am worried about it, I don’t use eBay much anymore but I have some mid range items I want to sell and I’m worried about less seller protection
The fees are bad on every platform except Mercari and Etsy but I don’t like either lol

Hi, I'm now switching to managed payments and have a question about eBay rules for seller protection concerning sig confirmation. No matter what I do at my local post office, they can't get their system to sell both sig confirmation and insurance for items $750 and up. Once they put in the insurance amount it kicks out the sig conf option. If they try sig first and then insurance, it also fails. Over $500 USPS insured value automatically requires a signature for delivery, and that fits with Paypal's seller protection policy--but evidently not with eBay, unless I'm misunderstanding.

How do I satisfy eBay protection now for sales over $500? Thanks.

Why don't you print your labels through ebay? You can do just about everything through that portal plus, it's a considerable savings over the same service at the post office.

Does the insurance signature over $500 show online? (In the "olden" days, signature for insurance was for postal use only and wasn't online-viewable. I think if it's now viewable online, you're fine.

Basically I've never printed labels on eBay because I generally charge a flat shipping rate vs. calculated and weighed. Maybe that's not a good reason? I'll look into it.

Yes, the sig is viewable online, via USPS Proof of Delivery. So it sounds like by eBay rules I have the equivalent of sig confirmation by virtue of paying for full insurance over $500. This is what the post office people keep telling me, that it'd be redundant to add it and maybe that's why it's not an option.
Thank you!

I charge flat rate (same price for everyone) also. The discounted rate is the reason I do it.

You'll kick yourself once you start and see how much money you could have saved! For a long time, I printed through paypal but priority prices are even discounted more than paypal's discounted price, both of which are cheaper than the retail rate.

Last time I checked, 1st class parcels are the same prices on both ebay and Paypal, and again, both are discounted from what you'd pay at the post office.

From what I am reading it sounds like eBay is trying to become like Mercari. Mercari has always managed payments since I have been selling on their site. I don't sell anything too expensive on any of these sites. I just read what was posted regarding eBay's fee structure and my head is spinning, lol.

I had no idea!I would have tried printing labels and postage a long time ago!

So Ebay is trying to get me to update my seller details early (by 12/1) in exchange for a $15 coupon. First of all, I can no longer use a PO Box (requires a street address) and they're requiring both a SSN and a bank account. Are there any selling platforms that don't require this information? If we don't update our information by the 12/31 deadline I guess we can't sell on eBay any more?

I don’t want to give eBay my social or bank account info either.
Someone finally bid on my Coach item last week. If I don’t sign up for this managed payment scheme I wonder if I’ll never get paid? ☹️. This is my only item currently listed. I will never list another item on eBay again.

Has anyone sold anything under the new system? I had a buyer pay that way for the first time yesterday, and found to my dismay that my total fees were higher than with PayPal. I thought ebay advertised its new system as being cheaper. Mine was a low-value item so the difference here was not a big deal, but I'm wondering if it scales up. =/

I ended up ending the auction even though someone had already bid. I don’t want to give eBay any info and be in a position where I’m obligated to ship the item out but can’t get the money unless I provide eBay all the info. So long eBay!

I hope eBay chokes on this pill it forces on its sellers.

I (Germany) had to switch a commercial account over, that I "oversee", because it's vital for another year or so. But after that, good riddance eBay. The good part is, it's still not rolled out for us, we're awaiting implementation. (Means, we put all the information in place, but eBay hasn't officially switched it on for us.)

The worst part, for proper identification we had to log in into our online banking via the eBay sign up process. And provide highres images of an ID. God knows what data they collected during those minutes, and what they will use the pictures for ...

I'm literally waiting for breaking news, that the servers where that information is stored are now/ were compromised and data stolen.

It's not only going to be more expensive, it's also a great way for eBay to keep funds if they decide a case against the seller or do other funky sh*t. I don't trust them for a single penny. Never did. But sadly, it is still the "place to be" if you want to reach the widest audience by far, for "our" products. But the minute there are just few leftovers, those are going to be trashed/donated and the account will be deleted.

I've had it with eBay a long time ago.

Kind regards,
Oliver

I was forced to change to the Managed Pay system a while ago. I opened a separate checking account and only use it for my Ebay deposits, then I transfer the money to other accounts that Ebay has no access to. It took a little while to get use to the new system but I did. I think the fees are a little bit higher and Ebay also charges the $.30 per item charge that Paypal charges. At first it took a bit to get my money from the sales but now it transfers fairly quickly. Change is difficult some times but I wanted to continue selling, so I adjusted.

I wouldn’t mind opening a new bank account, but just didn’t want to give them my SSN. That was the main reason I quit eBay.

My managed payments kicked in on October 26 and for the most part, it's been smooth.

Although it looks like the fees you're paying to ebay are higher than the 10% you used to pay to ebay, the increase is because the fee also includes the 2.9% plus 30 cents you also paid to paypal. So although it looks like you're paying just under 13%, it's the same amount you paid in the past when you'd add ebay and PP fees together.

I believe there's also a benefit to Managed payments because when payment was made through PP, fees weren't refundable. However if you take a return and give a refund through MP, you'll get your fees back EXCEPT for the 30-cent fees. (The 2.9% comes back to YOU rather than Paypal retaining it.)

I ended up ending the auction even though someone had already bid. I don’t want to give eBay any info and be in a position where I’m obligated to ship the item out but can’t get the money unless I provide eBay all the info. So long eBay!
By ending a listing which already had a bid, you end up paying the FVF based on the buyer's bid amount. So it didn't save you anything.

--------ETA:
The only drawback (and my only complaint) with managed payments is that if there's a dispute (specifically, INR), because the payment wasn't received into your paypal account, the dispute can't be settled by ebay. Disputes come through the payment processor, which is PP and as such, they're handled like chargebacks.

It takes up to 3 weeks after proof of delivery is shown before the case is closed. (PP has to close it and notify ebay of the resolutation, at which time ebay releases your money.)
