Something about a 44 year old man and a 13 year old girl is so not right.
Oh, I know. :s
Someone (can't remember who?) was trying to say that, because her mother almost forced her onto him, as she was ambitious, that that, somehow, made it OK?
But, once again, that just makes it worse, as he was, basically, taking part in a child abuse ring, where her mother was the pimp!
I know it was a different time, but the crimes of child abuse and statutory rape did exist back then, too; even if they, generally, weren't so high profile.
I like Polanski's work, but I believe he was in the wrong. Maybe his sentence could be to do community service at Rape Crisis Center and/or donate a substantial amount to a charity benefiting child rape victims. I read today that he already paid the victim a $500,000 settlement, and of course she does not want to press charges.
Yes, I know, but TBH, it's really not down to her and nor should it be - many people (particularly rape victims) wouldn't press charges, if it was just down to them, as they (understandably) just want to move on with their lives and to try to forget it.
But justice is not just for the victim (or even primarily for the victim), it is to uphold the law and to discourage others from doing the same thing.
Otherwise, it would be total mayhem, as some victims of petty crimes would want the perpetrator hanged (or worse!), whilst some victims of really serious crimes would just want to forgive and forget!
I mean no one wants to give that horrible guy in California who kidnapped the 11 year old girl and help her captive for 18 years any kind of a break. I wonder if that girl doesn't want to press charges against him?
Quite.
It is complicated. I really wonder why the Polanski victim's mother dropped her off there alone? It is unforgivable and in my opinion INSANE that the mother did that.
Well, as I say, from what I've heard, she was
very ambitious and basically pimped her out... :s
