Hello all!

This forum is so great.

It's that time in my life where I'm ready to take the next step with my girlfriend of 6 years. I have asked her family for advice on rings but I'm still confused as to what shape to get.

The majority of her jewelry is yellow gold so should I stick with that? She has a big personality. She is fashion forward, glamorous and beyond beautiful. She is a conservative dresser (not frumpy) and is really a "Chanel No. 5 and red lipstick" girl (she says that all the time).

She doesn't like round cut stones. She did express this to me in passing. I know she likes Cartier and Van Cleef.

What kind of shape do you think would suit her? Should I get a coloured stone? I dont have a budget so fire away.

Pictures would be great!

Thanks everyone. This is so great!

Awww... so thoughtful of you to put in so much effort in choosing the right e-ring. Here's what i think.

Don't go for something branded because you end up paying too much for a small rock.

Gold is fine, as long as the prongs are white (else the diamond will look yellow).

Think about the wedding band because eventually she'll wear the wedding band together with the e-ring and if it's gold i don't know if it'll go with a white band.

Shape wise it's hard to say, but IN MY PERSONAL Opinion, i would avoid emerald or ascher cuts as they can look a bit "plastic-like" if you don't get the right cut. I have seen very nice emeralds and aschers so no offense to anyone who likes these cuts.

Size wise i think try to go for minimum 1 carat. Cut minimum Very Good. Colour wise at least I. Clarity SI3. Don't go any lower than these criteria if you want a decent looking diamond. But if you can afford better do it cos it's an e-ring and she can wear it everyday for the rest of her life.

http://diamondring.org/10-diamond-shapes-that-reflect-her-personality. Personally I think Emerald or Asscher. They are the epitome of of timeless taste and classic style but a little off the beaten path..............:smile1:

I am also going to say Emerald or Asscher. Classic, not AS flashy, and definitely amazing. Perhaps a 3ct of either? Just note that an asscher does not face up as large as a Round.

Here's a pretty rad new Asscher cut...theyre AMAZING and there's not a lot in the wild to see duplicates of. And this guy knows his stuff. He's out on Long Island. Obviously probably smaller than you are interested in but he has them cut so he could cut you whatever you wanted.

You could see about a threestone option that included sapphire side stones as well. I cannot WAIT to see what you select.

You said no budget but I am sure you do have an idea in mind.

Thanks everyone! I am starting to be very fond of cushion and emerald cuts. The thing with emerald cut is that it seems so flashy and celebrity. I can't help but see those Kardasens (?) with their huge tacky rings. As for budget I don't want to pay more than I did for my car but this is a once in a lifetime purchase. I'm still confused!

Which cut is more unique?

I think a three stone oval in a yellow gold setting would be gorgeous! And luscious looking!

With Asschers and emerald cuts, buying colorless and high clarity is a must since you can see any color or inclusions easily. The high color may be offset by setting it in yellow gold. If you go this route, you could always give her a yellow diamond wedding band so her set just "goes" with her other jewelry without being too matchy.

For branded, I would take a look at the Tiffany Lucida engagement ring in gold.

I didn't think I wanted a round, but once I saw it on my hand I loved it. There's a reason round cuts are the most expensive... They look great on the hand, they sparkle like nothing else... I'd also look at Tiffany's Schlumberger Two Bees engagement ring or pairing the classic solitaire in gold with the Schlumberger X diamond band for a wedding band. You can't more classic and luxe than Schlumberger... Jackie O rocked it out!

asscher is definitely more unique then an emerald cut. I think ame is on to a great stone above. it has the step cut and classic look of an emerald but with more depth in the cut and flashes of fire!

Love the idea of an asscher!

Especially the idea of a three stone, maybe like this?

My DH surprised me with a custom ring when he proposed. People compliment the ring like crazy in person.

Secretly (ok, not so secretly I told him this years after) I wish I got to pick my ring since I'll be wearing it forever. I think you should propose with a placebo ring (something cute that she could wear as her right hand ring) and then have her pick her own ring by letting her look at the pictures in this forum. I think she'll love you letting her pick her ring since her tastes and her look are unique. I like the ring my DH gave me, but I'm not in love with it. It's probably worth $100,000 plus by now with all these diamond increases too. I sound ungrateful I know, but I still wish I picked my ring since I'm the one wearing it, not him.

Just a thought. I'm sure both of you would have fun doing the ring shopping, especially her if you let her choose.
