If the signature fabric is important, then this alternative wouldn't work, but the outlet in my area has LOTS of the leather flap bags in the size you listed at a GREAT price. Perhaps that would allow you to have both?
If you must choose just one, I would choose the tote, simply because I think it is more versatile. Of course, I commonly carry a slightly larger bag than the flap, so I am clearly biased. But I really like the look of the tote when it is being carried, as it is not slouchy at all.

I have the gallery tote but in the brown/brass (dark brown signature with dark brown suede bottom). It's perfect as an everyday bag for me but I carry a lot of stuff, including stuff for my preschooler.
I agree that the light camel suede on the bottom of the gallery tote that you're considering could be a big problem since you want to use it as an everyday bag. Have you considered the brown/brass version? The suede on mine is holding up very well. I've been using it everyday since I got it a few weeks ago, not babying it at all, and it looks perfect still. It's very dark so it doesn't show any grime like the camel colour will. Plus, the dark brown goes well with both brown and black outfits.
From the amount of stuff you carry, it sounds like the large flap would be perfect for you! I wish I could get away with carrying something smaller for everyday but there's no way that's happening anytime soon.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. I am deciding not to decide yet. I have flipped and flopped, and himmed and hawed, and I am going to just return the tote and wait. I think I am going down to the Coach store next week and look around a little more. I DO think that I am leaning towards the flap though. My only worry about the flap is how easy is it to get in and out of? Does the flap stay up? I am in the car a lot and have to reach over to get my ID out and I worry about getting in and out of it easily. Does it loosen up a little? I think that this one would be best for me for the long haul. If Coach would put the leather on the bottom of the tote it would be perfect, but that suede will freak me out all the time. So for now I am going to wait and see if the something calls to me. Thanks again, I can not thank you all enough. Mokey
