^Yeah, the shape and structure always make a difference! That's a nice bag.
The curb-chain gives the Dakotah a little structure, but it's still a bit floppy unless you fill it up. That's why the smaller size is better, and the fringe is even more structured, but that feels like a little thicker leather too I noticed (and heavier). The one thing I didn't like about the Rhyders was the lack of structure and how the bottom of the bag looked with stuff in it... or it would be something I would have to get used to (unless I could use a purse organizer, which I sometimes do in bags).
Another problem I had with the larger size Dakotah is strap length. Because he tapered the strap, it's impossible to punch any add'l holes to shorten the length, and I didn't like the length on me at all. It was ok xbody, but as a shoulder bag, not so much, and I rarely carry any bag xbody. I probably could have pulled off the larger bag with a shorter strap, I think, but I didn't like the look at all like that. The shortest length on the smaller Dakotah is ok for me. IMO both the proportion of the bag and strap length are great.
Don't stress it. Just try it, especially if you really don't like the one you have! I have so many bags I tried to make work for me over the years, and most of them still have the tags on them! I said no more! It's truly a waste of money, and if the company is in the toilet anyway, it's an even bigger waste, kwim??
