Okay as I mentioned before in an earlier post of mine back in Christmas 1986 my mom got a full-length Golden Island fox fur coat and absolutely loved it. I remember that for the rest of the 1980s and the 1990s and the early 2000s she would wear it all the time. Now fur coats are no longer in style and aren't really politically correct. I was born in 1975 and grew up in Chicago during the 1980s and a fur coat was the most coveted thing a woman could own. I remember during the winter months back in 1984 and 1985 when I was 9 and 10 years old my mom had wanted a full-length fox fur coat like crazy. I remember her jaw-dropping whenever we saw a woman wearing a full-length fox fur coat. She would always ask them about their full-length fox fur coats and would even ask to try them on. I remember her nagging my dad like crazy for one and her making me and my brother stop in fur coat stores with her and there she would try them on. My poor dad had reached a boiling point back in Christmas 1985 when her sister got a full-length fox fur coat so the next Christmas he got her a full-length golden island fox fur coat and she absolutely loved it and during the winter from then on she would make it a point to wear it as much as possible so she would go to as many parties, museums, office functions, fancy restaurants, the opera, the theatre or the symphony for a chance to wear it. I remember I loved that coat as well and would always try it on during the winter months when she wasn't looking because she loved that coat more than life itself and wouldn't let anyone try it on but her. I remember telling her when she first got that coat that one day, I would want to own a coat like that, and luckily for me as a college graduation gift I had gotten one from my parents back in 1997. My parents got me a full-length silver fox fur coat and I would wear it out as much as possible at like fancy events for a 13-year period from like 1997-2010 once I realized that fur was no longer in style. I still have the coat just like my mom still has her coat we just both haven't worn them in over 10 years and we both wish that it was acceptable for us to wear them out. I know people have a lot of issues with fur when it comes to animal rights stuff, but people don't seem to care when people wear leather. I just love wearing fur it's so warm and soft and I love the way fox fur feels. It's nothing like any other coat.

My mother had a beautiful full length fur coat & i used to long for a coat to keep me warm like hers! (Not down, i hated the fat down coats of the 80s lol).
Those coats were truly magnificent, it's a pity you can't wear it anymore.
I would love to see pictures of your coat though.

Did you’re mom also own a full length Fox fur coat and did she jump and down with happiness when she first got her fur coat. I love my fur coat as well, there is no better feeling than wearing a full length Fox fur coat.

Fur coats are so soft. My mom would always touch her fur coat when wearing it and I would do the same thing. Fur coats are definitely amazing and fun to wear, I remember my dad told me that at the first opera he took my mom to in January of 1987 right after she got her coat that another husband told him that once you buy you’re wife a fur coat you instantly become an opera season ticket holder lol since so many women would use the opera as an execuse to wear a fur coat.

Thank you for the lovely story, Shopaholicandshoelover! I worked in the Chicago Loop at the time your mom was dreaming of a fox coat. I remember riding the buses through the near-north side and near Miracle Mile and seeing all the women riding to work--to work!--wearing those amazing fox fur coats. They looked so warm and elegant. It seemed to be the style to wear one's hair pinned up in an upsweep with the fur. The marketing director at the company where I worked would stride in every morning in her heels and meticulously upswept hair and fox coat, looking so beautiful and chic. I and my fellow-pauper roommates dreamed of one day having such a coat too. Ah, those were the days!

My own mom dreamed of a mink stole, like the Kennedy ladies wore to political teas in the '60s. My dad eventually bought her one second-hand from friends who were moving to Florida. My mom had it restyled with her name embroidered into the lining, and she was so very proud of it, but I think she wore it only twice. It is now hanging in my office closet. It makes me sad when I look at it. Stoles went out of fashion so long ago. As did afternoon teas with silver services where the ladies would dress in their suits and pearls. But it reminds me of my mother and her dreams.

I'm glad your mom enjoyed so many lovely outings wearing her coat. I wish my mom had worn her fur more often.

We have several fur threads check ‘em out. I wear them all winter. Many of us do. Of course there are some updated styles now but by all means, wear your fur if you love it. You could always alter your coat for a more modern update. They are sustainable unlike faux fur made from plastic which sits in land fields. Many of us have coats passed down from generation to generation and they have meaning. If you do a search you’ll find the other threads.

I think maybe it depends on where you are, they're being worn in Dallas and in Carmel!

Yeah, definitely depends upon where you live. I've read they're tres chic in Iceland. I live in the Great White North and no one wears furs here, even though temps often dip below 0 in the evening this time of year, but I think it's because fashion has grown so casual. No one dresses up around here, not even to go to the opera or fancy restaurants. It's quite sad really. :confused1:

I remember my mom being so excited to wear her golden island to work that she couldn’t sleep the night before lol.

My mom also wore her fur in an upsweep and I would also wear my fur with a bun in my hair. I do remember walking in Chicago winters with her wearing her golden island fox and having her hair up like that. I remember my mom then went from the woman drooling over another woman's fur coat to having another woman drool over her fur coat. This post makes me want to break out my full-length silver fox very badly. I just wish there was a place where I could wear it. I still wear it around the house though just like my mom still wears her fur around the house.

Super casual here too! DH has to remind me to wear it on super cold nights, goes with anything ;)

Agree with this! I’ve also had furs redesigned. When it’s very cold , it’s much better than a puffy :)
