Hi Doc

I have 2 vintage box Kellys from the early 1970s (one gold and one Rouge H or maybe Bordeaux). They are both in ok condition given their age but both do have some light cracking in the top layers around the main creases of the gussets, and the folds and edging of the top flap of the bags.

What would you advise as the best conditioner to help keep them supple and to avoid any further cracking as much as possible? I’d also like to help continue to develop their patina and shine at the same time, particularly for the gold as it has certainly lost some of its luster. I’ve seen a lot of recommendations for Blackrocks etc but also that some people have had bad experiences with it on vintage box leather bags so I’d love to know what products you’d recommend to best help with both of these concerns?

Thank you so much in advance for your help. This forum really is an incredible resource and hugely helpful for all those of us with a love for these bags but not the knowledge for how to help preserve them :-)

Thanks again

Hi there,
You can find the products I have used and tested for various leather types, I do not recommend B & O any longer as too many ended up not happy with their results.
I also have a YouTube chanel where you can follow along at home in polishing your Box Calf bags with me.
All the best, doc

Dear Mods if I have over stepped with this post please find I an hermes bag care tip below

To my TPF friends,

It has been my pleasure to assist you all these many years what has it been a decade and a half already ?

There is an Hermes bag storage tip at bottom of this post

Because this is a help thread I also will share this ...

I will let you in on a little secret, people who are kind hearted tend to attract covert victim vulnerable narcissists .

Over the last 15 years I’ve had wonderful interactions and made some lifelong friends through our mutual love of Hermes.

However, out of the hundreds of happy connections in this past year I have attracted 2 narcissists.

Once I discover that I am dealing with toxic narcissist the only solution is to go zero emotional contact which leads to the classic narcissistic driven smear campaign. The 1st smear campaign happened by one narcissist and now another is preparing to go down from the other.

I write this now not for sympathy but to warn those that might feel inclined to respond to the victim vulnerable narcissists and therefore feed them with the attention they need and unknowingly become entangled

I hope you will take my warning to heart and protect yourselves. as I truly wish you all only the best.

sincerely, doc

I find the best way to store your Hermes bags is to stuff it lightly with balled up acid free tissue to help it keep its shape. Buckle up or put the bag in closed position. Store in its dust bag on its back away from direct sunlight, heat or dampness.

hi Doc, would like to ask your help, if there's a scratch on Epsom with the top "skin" of the color leather being scratched off, is it fixable at H Spa or someone trusted? is it a big job i.e. expensive? thank you!

Hi there,
Yes that should be fixable however When you want to fix a color loss area in the middle of a panel it’s always difficult if not impossible to get an absolutely perfect Color match ( unless black ) as colors oxidize and change at different rates . Think of you get a big scratch on your car door , the body shop will paint the whole door so it will look uniform. And even then the newly painted door will often look a different color from the rest of the vehicle due to the age and oxidation of the paint.
And in addition to that the reds are notoriously the toughest to match and they oxidize / change color tone so quickly even a great match often isn’t anymore months on down the road.
I know this answer is rather lengthy ...
In recap fixable yes ,
Often a restoration shop will recolor the whole panel to cover a small scratch to keep the are looking uniform
A small color restoration in the middle of a panel often looks quite different from the surrounding area for reasons mentioned above.
kind of a catch 22.
I hope this makes sense?
All the best doc

Hi Doc
This vintage new to me box calf has arrived. Not too worried about the little scratches but didn’t know about this larger one when purchase and am conscious that hermes won’t get rid of scratches on box. Is it a permanent fixture that I have to live with or can something be done by someone other than Hermes?
Thanks in advance

Hi doc,

Thank you so much for volunteering your time to assist us. I sometimes keep my wallet in my jeans pocket, which has resulted in some denim transfer… and it appears to have transferred again into the lambskin interior of my Constance! I hadn’t seen any tips for this type of leather specifically, nor whether anything can be done now that it’s set, but wanted to get your thoughts and advice. I do have some Lexol wipes on hand, but they didn’t do much.

In addition, is there anything I can do about the chevre calvi? The transfer isn't bad and hardly visible to the naked eye, but I don't want to keep causing transfer issues with bags. Thank you in advance, and apologies for the poor photos.

Hi
I’m not seeing the exterior on the constance or the calvi ...?
color transfer on soft smooth lambskin I believe it will not remove without causing further damage IMO.
On the exterior jeans transfers should be removed within a few hours preferably
With dye transfer products preferably by a professional
Absolutely do NOT use a conditioner or a lexol cleansing wipe on top of jeans transfer or inks it may actually drive the dye or ink into the leather further.
you might also want to treat the leather to help prevent the dye’s migration into the leather should this happen again.

All the best ,doc

Thank you so much for the quick response. There’s no issue on the outside, just the blue marks inside the Constance. Sounds like nothing can really be done, could spa possibly help?
And should it happen on the exterior (epsom), you would not suggest immediately wiping off with Lexol? That’s good to know, as I would have thought the opposite!

Hi
Hermes might be able to make this look better , and a trusted luxury leather restoration specialist should also be able to make this look better. Using fillers and such could be done also , however I think there’s a point where too much correction can make the bag look odd . So conservative restoration is key. Also this being a red bag especially color matching a discrete area is near impossible when it’s out away from an edge in particular the eye will pick it up usually. I just answered a question above that would help answer some of this question.
All the best doc
Here’s my answer from another post regarding red bags and color correction of Discrete areas...

Correct I would NOT use a lexol conditioner or lexol cleaner to try to remove color transfer as these might drive the color transfer into the leather .
I would use a product specific to color transfer removal and have it on hand before you have the problem
Again I would treat the leather to help sheiks it from the dye migration into the leather should color transfer happen again
All the best doc
