I don't have much of a choice--I have a metal allergy, so it has to be either gold or silver (oh, POOR little me!).
I'd feel naked without my baubles, especially earrings and a statement necklace. Of course, I have some evening wear pieces that would look out of place in daytime, so those I don't wear then. And I have a few delicate antique pieces I'm afraid to wear much, or while walking in snow or grass (in case the pieces break and fall into the snow/grass). I had plenty of that happen while dressed for Civil War reenacting--antique 1860's brooches that broke the first time I wore them.
I think jewelry should, in most cases, be worn, and often. It's for fun and a part of my look. I know women who have, for example, genuine pearls that were gifts, "Of course, I'll never wear them." Why not? What a waste of money, the designer's and jeweler's time, and materials. And, in the case of pearls, it can be worse for them not to be worn periodically. Pearls need some skin oil to stay hydrated. (I always think of the delighful news photo, pre-Castro days, that showed wealthy Cuban ladies decked out in all of their pearl pieces, taking a dip in the ocean, in order to hydrate the pearls. They apparently did this once or twice a year!)
