A big eye opener for me was reading "Deluxe: How luxury lost it's luster" and the chapter on silks.... just incredible.

All my better non-H scarves are all vintage... the weight, the hand, I dunno, just always felt more substantial but I have never treated them royally, they're still scarves to be worn. I LOVE wearing them as tops. I have two kinds of scarves... cheapies that go around my head in the summer, on the beach with big hoops (its def a look, I know lol) or around my waist and a swimsuit, or the kind I'd wear with a suit, or out for dinner on a nice day.

I love H scarves, but lately I can't stand being fussy. I've only worn pocket squares since I've been preggers LoL and I only have those in H.

I have a couple of Gucci scarves (which I hardly wear anymore), three Dior Mousselines (all the same design, extremely tiny Dior Logos) and just recently purchased a limited edition Dior silk scarf that's printed with original sketches of the "New Look". Also a couple of LV shawls and scarves. But I love my H scarves the most!!

Thanks for all the replies - what i really want to know though especially from you who have gucci, lv, longchamp, lanvin, dior etc scarves is --is the quality of the silk as good, better or worse, and if there is anyone there who knows of a brand whose silk is superior to hermes.

Does this book "Deluxe: How luxury lost it's luster" imply that big fashion houses farm out their stuff to china so it is no longer lxury but just made on a conveyor belt. Has anyone read this book, what does it imply about silk scarves, does it mention best quality. thanks if anyone knows.

I just stumbled upon this great thread.

for starters i bought cheap $5 scarves as a start to see if i can wear them for an upcoming trip. Yes it did work for me!

I'll be buying H bags first so no more budget for a scarf.

Can i get quality scarves too at the department stores? looking for a 100% pashmina shawl too.

thanks!

Lately I am loving the Gucci flowers .. and I'd love to have one of the tigers made out of flowers, the Ferragamo scarves. And I have some older no-name, especially a black-brown-gray that seems to go with everything. And some Echo's.

Now don't shoot me, but often I want a slightly softer scarf than my H.

Ah I didn't answer the quality question either. None of my other scarves is as heavy a silk as the Hermes .. but I think the Gucci scarves are as good quality. I have a D&G scarf of lovely quality. Most of my others are much lighter, not as well hemmed, colors not as well done, etc.
People are mentioning some other brands here that I don't know ..

My mom usually purchases 2 scarves to have an "ao dai" (traditional Vietnamese dress) made. She likes Chanel for the beautiful camellias, dislikes Hermes because it is too stiff, and her favorite is Cartier because their designs really show up well in photographs. She's probably purchased at least 40 Cartier scarves for her dresses, whereas her few Hermes scarves sit unused because they're too muted for her.

I am thinking, thinking .. how does she get a dress out of two 35 inch scarves???????? Short dress. Is she very very petite??

I wear any scarf I like. From Loro Piana to the souvenir ones you buy at botanic garden gift shops (some are really beautiful) to Burberry, Chanel, Hermes, YSL, Gucci and even old Liz Claibornes from the 90s.

The scarf I really want is the Gucci Flora they did for Grace Kelly in the 60s. I love that print! I have a bag and a matching scarf would be cool.

deluxe discusses the history of weaving centers like como region in italy and lyons where a factory called bucol is owned by Hermes and manufactures for H and makes fabrics for couture houses. ( i believe Deluxe stated that bucol is contractually bound not to state whom they manufacture for). According to deluxe, China is now the primary producer of plain silk twill (a lot of Italian manufacturing stopped around WWII) where the objective is lower price. But, one of the top manufacturers in Como produces for LVMH brands, Marc Jacobs, Celine, Dior, Fendi, Gucci & Pucci (Pucci created silk jersey with a manufacturer in Como in the 1950's). The bulk of work in italy centers around weaving and printing. BTW, Deluxe also pointed out that older looms weave at a slower rate but can produce higher quality than computer driven looms (silk screen is computer generated)

I personally love etro because it started as a fabric house before it was a fshion house. Love loro piana quality but find designs a bit too conservative.

But, buy what you love !

P.S. cashmere from Scotland is drier and hardier than the softer milled cashmere from Italy in general according to a friend who owns a retail luxury shop for men. . .
