Do you think distaste for brands like MK and Coach is rooted in fear of being "basic?

I do think that many shun these brands to avoid being seen as "basic", "entry level", "gauche", "tacky", etc.

And, other people flock to these brands because they want to be seen as "stylish", "trendy", "savvy", "boss", etc.

At the end of the day, there are a very few people who pick bags solely on quality, function and value (and many who claim they do are lying to themselves and everyone else. lol!)

The desire to buy something that fits a psychological need/desire/dream is why companies build and market brand identities v just offering generic product. And, that's great. We can all pick the brand that has the style / panache / quality / function / value combo that appeals to us.

But! To a handbagless Hades with whomever would presume to tell us to trade up or down because they think we chose our bags for the "wrong" reasons. That kooky, brainless, condescending attitude is the epitome of "basic".
Hear, hear!

Agree completely. Basic is a mentality, not a brand.

I think it's because some MK and Coach tend to have those big in-your-face logo plastered all over the bags.
I don't think it's just because some are/were signature bags, or because of the hang tags (though some people don't like those). It's because they are very popular bags right now. It's an excuse to put a lot of people down while making themselves feel special because they feel they are 'above it'. This is played out everyday with more things than bags. Some people never lose that high school mentality.
More bags for me.

You're right. But I also know some who don't like big logos plastered in the bags.

My first expensive bag was a Coach. That bag has taken a beating but doesn't look significantly different from when I bought it!
I'm not nuts over big logos either. This old MK I just got still looks new, even though I think it came out on 07. It's a good bag. But have to confess, if it came with a hang tag I would have taken it off.
I can't say much about current Coach or MK, I don't have any. But the older ones I have seen are strong, substantial bags that still look great today.

I still have lots of Coach. All but 1 is all leather and no logos. I also have Fendi, Gucci,LV,Chanel, Prada etc...
The funny thing is as soon as I get bored with my "luxury" handbags I have no problem selling them but my leather Coach bags I've had for years and I have a hard time letting them go.

I go for quality no matter the label.

I went to a Coach outlet store recently and I was surprised that the big logo bags seem to be just a small portion of the store.

I have not own a Michael Kors or Kate Spade, so I can't comment on the durability. But I see both of them in online stores, and the designs kinda look similar? Or maybe just the pictures of the bags I've seen. But I did read that the old Michael Kors were very good.

I also heard that the new Coach bags now have leather linings!

I'm so tired of seeing Coach=signature claims. If anyone cares to check by going on to the website, they either stopped producing the sig bags, or it's only a minority of their overall output. Somehow when a premier brand like Gucci or Fendi does jacquard, then that's totally okay?

I happen to like coach and have nothing against other contemporary but will NEVER EVER get a MK, the most obvious plagiarism out there, maybe that's a different story

Like I posted earlier, I went to the outlet store of Coach and was surprised that the logo bags take up a small portion of the store. :)

But Coach logos were really ubiquitous years ago so maybe that image sticks on some people. I don't like logos, but I also don't like them in all bags. I bought a Louis Vuitton recently (vintage, just to see what is the fuss) and I'm already selling it on eBay. :D

I think it there's some truth to this for some people for sure. Where I live, Coach, Michael Kors and Kate Spade are everywhere. They make nice bags at an affordable price point, so it makes sense that a lot of people buy them. And I think some people might avoid those brands for fear of having what everyone else has.

Personally, a nice bag is a nice bag. And I admittedly have very basic taste in handbags. My most used bags are a Longchamp Le Pliage tote and an LV Speedy Bandouliere- I see them everywhere, but they are bags that I love and work for my lifestyle. I get a lot of joy out of them, and I wouldn't not use them just because they're common and basic.

The current styles are very similar and not my style, I like Hobos.
Last winter I went to a Coach boutique and it's true, the suede bags were lined in leather and the leather bags were lined with suede. They were pretty, some were embellished with lots of flowers.

That is true, however I see people carrying the signature bags all the time, I think they are still popular and the reason people associate Coach with those bags. There are just a lot of them out there.
I know other brands have done it, like D&B for instance, but I can't remember the last time I saw someone carrying one.
