Do you think distaste for brands like MK and Coach is rooted in fear of being "basic?

This is an interesting topic. My personal experience, I also thought it was basic, but I went into a MK store with a friend and ended up falling in love with a bag and I bought it without much thought.

I ended up selling the bag months later because it didn't get much use, but I'm not sure why people use bags to identify with themselves with. Wearing Givenchy bag doesn't any more special, just means your bank account took a bigger hit.

I don't know "basic brands". I know basic styles.
LV Neverfull is a pretty basic style, everybody has it in any brand. A clutch is also a basic style. And a shoulder flap bag, a cross body small bag.

Calling a brand basic I find pretty silly and wrong by definition.

Does "basic" mean pants that cover your butt, tees that cover your belly button and shoes that don't hurt your feet?
Call me basic.
Does it mean simple makeup that doesn't look like you're going clubbing @ 10am? Colors of hair that are found in nature? Nails that are clean and neat that you could actually work in?
Is basic a simple handbag that doesn't look like it rolled in beer last night? A wallet that doesn't show the cardboard inner form?
A coat with all its buttons that has been cleaned this decade?
It's that BASIC, sign me up.....for life.

:lolots:
Yeah for the basics! I guess I'm in. :D

Don't get me wrong, I love fun new pieces and staying current.
I subscribe to all the high style mags. I don't dress like a "mom" unless I am @ a kids sporting event where the slushed tend to go airborne.
"basic" has just become an insult from snotty young things who are afraid to grow up fashion wise.

Over the summer, I used my Coach Bleecker Daily half the time. The other half I wore either my
Balenciaga bags, or my LV Neverfull in DE (The LV NF DE being the most basic of premier bags).

I think somewhere around your mid 20's, you stop caring about being basic, and start caring about where your life is going.

I've always had a moderately unique style. I am edgy preppy yet I shop at all the basic stores: h&m, old navy and target is where I get a ton of my staples. It is funny as I rarely see people with my stuff on and I shop at very mass market stores. I was shocked to see a woman on the bus with a dress I own on today!

As for bags, I like structured classics. I have Coach, Kate Spade and MK bags I use often and usually find styles there that work well for me.

But oddly, I have has my MK Selma for a couple of years (I happened to get it during release week). And now I am less excited about it since it is so popular. I haven't figured out why.

I have spent years looking for a great black bag. And I realized that for unknown reasons getting a Coach/MK bag for this purpose wasn't going to work. Maybe because I was afraid to see my bag everywhere. Or maybe because I didn't want to be easily pinned.

This part of the article struck me:
"My friend shook her head and said,*'It isn’t about doing or pursuing things that you or others could consider ‘normal.’ It’s about experiencing these things with your own unique approach and your own personal sense of adventure. Everybody, at some point or another, does things that are just like everybody else. It’s up to you to know how to make those things your own.'"

I haven't bought mk or coach, because I haven't really liked any mk or coach bags for myself, yet. End of story.
There's no screaming agenda or need to feel superior behind my decision. It's just personal preference.

I'm rather happy to be basic. Or, as I like to say, "simple." This isn't a joyless, adventureless, same-as-everyone-else state, imo--no one has accused me of being usual, yet. ;)
And it's possible to stay basic, even with "glamorous" handbags--with whatever bag is chosen & liked. As long as a person's comfortable about who he/she is inside.

The former stray dog I adopted never has put on airs for being walked next to my mulberry or chanel. He slobbers on the pavement with joy, watching the exciting antics of squirrels, unconcerned by what others think.
And I love him for that.
He's a great role model, imo.

Some of my all time favorite bags are the Longchamp Le Pliages - I own 7 at the moment, so being afraid of being basic or going with the mass doesn't scare me! Usually there's a reason for mass appeal, with LP it's the quality; the bang for my buck I get.
I also like Coach a lot, I don't own one (yet) but if I get my way, one day I'll be the happy owner of a Bleecker tote. The designs, at least most of them, have a very unique spirit of old age about them, and that's what I like; the predictability. Coach has their own way of doing things and it works.

Many of my bags are the sort none of my friends would even dream of carrying; bright colors, dinky designs, things that not many girls stuck in jeans and hikers (winter is so much more fun with shoes you can actually walk in!) or SuperStars would carry. I have no problem with blending in OR jumping in ya face with my bag! :p
Still, I find MK a bit boring. The same saffiano over and over, the same boxy designs, the same mediocre leathers...I feel like if I invested my money on MK, I wouldn't be getting my money's worth. I do own a MK mini wallet, and that's all the Kors I need in my life.

And yes, I love broccoli rabe, it (well, anything) is delicious with a little salt and butter... :graucho:

Interesting article and topic- I am guilty of this. I try to buy/do things that are less common, but end up wearing things similar to the "Basic Girl" a lot of the time.
This reminds me of the book "Stuff White People Like-" has anyone read it? I was embarrassed by how many topics could have been written about me... It's a funny read!

What's that line from Fried Green Tomatoes?
Hot young things steal parking space from older woman:
"Face it granny, we're younger and faster"
Kathy Bates after smashing her car into that of the snotty young things:" Face it honey, I'm older and have better insurance".

I love it, Murphy😀

I think it all comes down to personal likes and dislikes. I personally loathe broccoli rabe. However, I don't make gagging noises if someone next to me is enjoying it immensely. Nor do I mount the nearest soapbox to decry how broccoli rabe is merely a blatant attempt to be mistaken for broccoli.

Too funny!

Anyway, the article is quite interesting but I really don't care if my bags (or I, for that matter) are considered basic. Too many bigger things to worry about in this world :p
