Do you own any bags from designers who were inspired by other designers?

I was at TJMaxx one day and saw this tote by BCBG. Once I got it home I realized that it was inspired by the Valentino Rockstud totes. It kind of turned me off. I still use it on occasion but more like just going to be pool and stuff. I know it's not a "fake" but it just kind of feels like that to me.

Thanks for posting! This is something I'm struggling with, I have a bag I bought off eBay ten years ago from a leather maker from Morocco and I had no idea the bags were all heavily inspired by designer bags of that era. I was an eBay shopper and I didn't know what the it bags were at that time. I bought 3. In the last year or so I've spotted the original versions of all of them and now I feel awkward about my dupes. I gifted two but the one that's almost exactly like the chloe edith is like the nicest saddle tan leather I've ever fondled and I want to keep it. But I can't carry it in public, I feel so weird about it because it's just like the chloe without the brand label of course. It isn't trying to be a fake yet it borrowed nearly all the design elements and I just can't cope. But it's so nice.....!!!! I need to find a non bag person to give it to I guess.

The MAB is actually inspired by the Balenciaga Metro. The MAC and 5-Zip are definitely original, though. RM is literally becoming the female version of "Michael Kors" now. If Kors is the "king" of knocking off other designers, might as well pass the "Queen" title to RM herself. She even went as far as making an exact dupe of the Balenciaga City/First/Hip with her absolutely hideous "Regan" bags. I cringe every time I see them in the stores.
Whoa! I had no idea on the MAB. Thanks for sharing! I always find these kinds of things interesting.

One thing I struggle with is sometimes I need a bag that I don't have to worry one bit about. A bag that looks nice but can occasionally be taken to the ballpark, outdoor music festivals, theme parks, etc. But I don't want a junk bag. So I'm looking at contemporary designer bags for a pretty, quality option. Something like the Regan would be a good option as I love the Bal plate bag but I wouldn't buy the Bal plate for this use because I don't want to risk it in situations like the above. So I wonder if I should buy an inspired contemporary bag that I like precisely because it's a premier knock off or if I should try to hunt for a contemporary bag that is completely original. I know everyone will say get what I like but hmmmmmm.... I can't like the bag and still not want to carry a direct inspiration.

That being said, even premium designers often take inspiration from each other. For example I love the Dior Diorama probably because I like Chanel Boy and I like the Chanel Kelly because I like Hermes' Kelly. But, really I'm responding to the shape/style. Not who had it first.

So I dunno. I think in the end, I would prefer to have a bag that isn't a direct knock off - no matter who makes it. But I'm always probably going to have a bag or two that is inspired / reminiscent of some design because most designers borrow and I tend to like certain shapes / styles.

Still thinking....

I am not sure if the Edith is still this popular that anyone (apart from tpfers) would recognise your bag as a look-a-like when your out and about with it in the wild. If you love that bag carry it!

I know it's like a decade past the point of even being on trend so maybe you're right, maybe it doesn't matter. The tiny country I live in doesn't even sell chloe and not many know it.

Absolutely! Premium designers take inspiration from each other.
Look at the Givenchy Antigona.....I cannot count the number of designers who are selling the same kind of bag....Should be a record...
Balenciaga makes a canvas tote which is the replica of Hermès Garden Party... except that Balenciaga is written in the front....
Of course no one says anything. They focus on Michael Kors....
Personally, I don't care. If the high end brands want to file suits they can.
Most of the time they don't. :amuse:
As for us consumera.....In French we say " we are not more royalist than the king..."

I believe the MAB was released in 2005 and the Metro in 2009.

I didn't know about the similarities between the bags until this series of posts! Either way, I much prefer the MAB to the Metro. I think the older RMs seemed quite Balenciaga-inspired, but they did also have their own thing going, and I love the MAMs and MACs.

You are not right about Hermes Garden Party and Balenciaga canvas tote. These bags are absolutely different literally in all, except primary design as a tote.

I remember taking the Bal tote in my hands and thinking, well it reminds me of the GP.....
Could it have been an another model?
Anyway, I prefer the GP....
More discreet....
