Do you guys get this?.. Cuz I don't!

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

a lot of deals are also done out of ebay. to them it is a marketing tool! (plus the best bags are usually not even on feabay anyway)

but as i said times and times again it is a free market and everyone can pay what an item is worth to them and so any seller can price how they want to. if it sells fine if not they may have to re think. but noone is forced to pay those prices .
also keep in mind that this is normal for any limited goods not h exclusive be it cars or watches or boats etc where there is limited suply (an no i am not talking bread and butter bags but rare one) there are always people who can get it to you for a premium
i do not see any harm

Of course Lilach, thanks for your note.
I didn't mean by my questions that I thought it was wrong, you are absolutely right this is a free market and people are free to buy and sell at whatever price they think is best.
I was just wondering why that was the case. Ie if you are a reseller who resells H bags for a business, not a hobby, why would you sell a bag X at a price of 20 when there is another reseller selling the same bag X at a price of 10. From a supply/demand perspective in the resale market it sounds strange, but of course not wrong, just strange.

There are a lot of resellers who offer items with only a very small markup. And some who don't. It's no different at all from buying anything else at resale. It depends on the seller's buying price, overhead, demand. Just buy from people you feel are offering the best price.

I think that is a great point perigord regarding the circle of buyers getting smaller, the post Polaremil posted is an interesting read. For me a difference is that, the thread was made in April 2008 and now in Feb 2009, the money market and peoples pockets are different.

I dont think much has changed ....there are times I have seen some H items other than bags which are sold for double and they are very much in stock in the shop or website..

i partially agree but as i said not all prices on ebay are fix!just becasue they are stated at price xy does not mean it sells for that amount.(just like real estate you can ask what you want what you actually get is another matter altogether basic principle anything is only worth as much as another party is willing to pay for it

they are mostly put there as advertising to show the arrey they have what they can offer you or maybe get you etc etc it is theri only way of adverts after all.

plus we do not know how much it cost the reseller to get the bag in the first place. like one reseller has a bj birkin she bought herself in paris and so is able for a little markup another bought it via a person who works for her in japan thus higher costs involved
kwim?

in the end buy where you feel confident/comfortable and happy and that involves the actual bag, authenticity, friendliness of seller, service, and price.
i am happy that there is competition out there.

the best customer is an educated customer and thanks to the internet anyone who wants to be informed can do so! very ********ic

There is also the fact that a lot of people (formerly myself included) do not know how much they should be paying for H items. It's not like they're going to walk into the nearest Hermes store and ask "how much is that Birkin in the window?" There is still the believe that "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" and a lot of fear being made a fool of in the store. So they pay a reseller double retail to buy something that is readily available online (if Hermes will ship to your country) or in the store to avoid some of that potential humiliation. We're all afraid of the "snooty salewoman" who makes us feel like our money is no good in Hermes.

I do think things have very much changed, April 2008 was different from present day Feb 2009. Words like "credit crunch" were not mentioned in the press. Very recently, there were threads going around talking about H price increases when before the credit crunch lots of threads were talking about podium orders etc.

maybe for us things have changed ...not for resellers

^^ I know, insurance must be painful! I think it comes down to different mindsets, if I had a ton of birkins, I would want them gone as soon as possible. So others can enjoy them, but I guess for me, it would be a hobby, not a business.

hmm, that's a good point - i'd forgotten that some resellers don't actually buy the bags themselves, but get middlemen to shop for the bags and probably need to pay them commission.

I think things are going to have to change for resellers. They won't be able to avoid the truth of the current world economic crisis.

I was told over a year ago by someone with Hermes that availability was going to increase for most items, and I think we've seen that happen.

Increased availability plus fewer customers who with the means to afford Hermes is bound to equal lower prices from resellers in the long run.

again depends on location. there are places where you would never find a birkin on the shelf. h will just shift inventory to places that still buy (and loads of it) or lower production etc there are mayn ways

i think the surplus of bags is just momentarily H will adjust. it is just that at the mometn PO and SO orders (made during better times) tickle in and thus land on the floor
