Do Sales Associates Know When You Return an Item That They Sold You??

I am a sales associate at a high end dep. store. At mine, we CAN see. I know some other department stores don't have this technology/capability that we do. But we can see. Everything. Everything you've ever purchased from our company, even at our off-price stores, online, etc. We can see everything you've returned (even if it isn't our return, even if its online or at another store/state/brand under our umbrella of ownership) and we can even see the store and register in which you returned it at. This is all so that we can better serve you, knowing past purchases and what doesn't work for you helps us serve you better. However, it can make S/A's salty. I recommend facing her, take the return to her, explain the situation. She's spent time getting to know you through this process, maybe she can recommend something better that you will love and recoup some of her losses. It happens. Even WE return things. But you have to respect that every return does cut out of their paychecks. Repay that with loyalty however, and they won't be so upset. Shop with them instead of online, do what you can to be loyal and they won't mind when the occasional item doesn't work out.

Boy, talk about "big brother!"

After reading this account, I almost feel like closing my newly opened N credit card. I don't want every busybody SA who rings up a sale for me to be in my business.... passing judgement on my transactions.... discussing my shopping habits amongst their co-workers as I leave their dept.

I’ve been an SA at several luxury brands now and honestly I think she will be understanding and grateful that you’re being honest with her. Yes it may have been a lot of hassle for her but I’m sure she won’t resent this and instead, I personally feel that you’ll both mutually benefit from this and have a stronger bond!
On another note, yes I may feel bummed out as it affects my sales report for the day (particularly if it’s been slow), however, I’m in the job to share my love and assist clients with informed choices.... so for me I’ll still be happy that at the end of the day the client is content with their purchase/experience

It doesn't matter what credit card you used, if you're in the system they have your info. It's not meant to be nosy it's to help us as SA and to make life a bit easier for customers who have lost receipts(making returns easy) and those that are looking for a specific product they purchased in the past or something similar.

I know as of a few years ago Nordstrom employees knew when you returned something. I bought a necklace from an SA I am friendly with, not even that expensive I think it was around $100 so not a big deal in terms of commission, I ended up returning it (not to her, at a different store) didn't think much of it. The next time I saw her she was like "so you returned the necklace." Honestly it really turned me off, I will still say hi to her if I see her but I really prefer to buy online if I can (I really don't buy as much at Nordstrom anyway these days, just don't see much there), because then if it doesn't work out I can just return the item to the store in peace and not worry about these type of comments.
