Do purse brands have reputations?

My friend lives on Long Island and I live in Connecticut...so it's possible that she doesn't really know that I have a lot of Coach bags. (And last time I saw her, I was actually carrying an Elliott Lucca bag.) So I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. Also, I have to factor in that "Long Island" thing...lol.... I could have used the opportunity of the conversation to say, "Hey, I'm carrying a Coach bag right now!" but I really did want to know what she thought and she probably would have backtracked if I had said that, you know?

I may be late to the party, but I wanted to add that I know plenty of people from Long Island that carry bags from Target. Snobs exist everywhere, I don't think it's a Long Island thing.

I have several family members who live on Long Island, and I have to say that the attitude you describe isn't really "across the board", thank heaven. I know quite a few people with lovely North Shore addresses who proudly carry their Coach bags. Tell her to take a peek at people's bags the next time she's at the Americana in Manhasset - I think she'll be quite surprised.

I do not "tye" myself down to one designer brand. I have designer handbags that range from Coach & Kooba to LV, Gucci, MJ, Dior. If I really like a bag from a particular designer, I buy it. The only "designer" brand that I do not like and will not buy is Dooney and Bourke.
