Do Chanel bags hold their value?

I feel like bags holding value is a common misconception. Nothing holds value better than jewelry imo. I think only Birkins are the only exception because they do hold their value...IF they are in amazing condition. But for any other bags...the value starts to spiral down the moment you touch it.

Bags are never a monetary investment and never really should be. That's why when people buy bags and call it an "investment" I start to laugh! It may be a good investment in terms of how much you use and love it...but it is definitely not an investment that holds its value.

I agree with you! Nothing is like money in your pocket! From my experience, i bought my jumbo double flap in 2012 for $4900 and it is currently $5500 plus tax. It is in excellent condition and I tried to sell it for $4800 and no luck.

On the other hand, I bought my birkin also in 2012 in Paris. Since it is cheaper to buy bags there even through a reseller I will get my money back plus more!!!!! I don't look at Hermes as an investment but at least I know I can more reliably get my money back.

For bags this pricy, I am concerned about selling it on eBay since eBay favors buyers and who knows what can happen.

Depends on the style colour.the rarer, the more it will go for,.most chanel bags,do hold their vaule, unless in a bad state,or not sort after.

I buy my bags because I like them, not for value for potential resale.
With Chanel bags, I think it depends on desirability & the condition of the bag.
I have sold some of my Chanel's both through consignment where I feel I am protected through a middleman & on eBay where I am not. The return of course through consignment is not good.

Just go on eBay and see how many Birkins are just sitting there, no takers. It depends on the timing, the bag you are selling, the condition, and how long you own it. The mini's and WOC are easier to get more for your investment. I have a WOC that I spent $1800.00 for a few years ago and just had the opportunity to sell it for $2000.00. The more reasonably priced Chanel, like the Mini and WOC are easier to sell because they are in the price range of many more buyers. The GST is another bag that if you purchased it a few years ago, and it is in good condition, you can get what you paid or more...timing.

WOC's went up avlot in price since I began buying them. If they are not used or have very little wear that would be a good investment if someone chooses to sell theirs

I think this is an excellent thread! I used to sell tons of my bags years ago when I no longer wore them because I wanted to fund for new ones...tons of Balenciaga, LV, Proenza, even a couple Chanels, etc. I never truly lost then, maybe a couple hundred at the most, but I was also selling bags I bought for way cheaper then they go for today.

For example, my M/L flap I bought in 2008 for $2425, I would NEVER sell it, however if I did now, I don't think I would lose anything because it's in excellent condition and retails for more than double of what I paid. Same with my Jumbos...I bought them when they were no more than $2700. However, if I were to buy a new one today, I feel that with the high price they are at over $5K, anyone who can afford a new one, wouldn't want a used one for just a few hundred dollars cheaper.

It's a sad fact that I can barely sell bags today. The market is so saturated too. I feel like even just 5 years ago or so, selling high-end bags was still sort of a niche, and then eventually everyone and their mother caught on. I have been wanting to sell my Celine Luggage bag that I bought for $1800 right when it first came out. I believe it's over $3500 now, maybe more, not sure? I looked online and there are tons of my bag sitting there waiting to be sold, and if they are luckily sold, most didn't even go over $1500. It's scary and I realize that honestly, I don't think many bags in general hold much value anymore. I remember years ago when I sold my Balenciaga Apple Green Day and made twice of what I paid for it because it was such a sought after color. I doubt I could ever do that in 2016!

you raise some excellent points!!! however, those of use who really know our chanel also know that it depends on the leather batch, color from specific season, etc that determines our holy grail. and not all others will agree with me on this next point, but i think overall quality for ALL brands have gone down while prices continue to go up. but for the lay person, i think you're right... they would rather buy brand new from the boutique or dept store than pay a bit lower for a "preloved" even though it's in amazing condition and depending on year, can be the HG that many of us want/look for. i think if you got on the classic flap train early on and kept your bags in great condition, i think their resale value is excellent, but if not and you only bought your bag a couple years ago, then no, i don't think resale value is great, esp with significantly lower offers from reputable resale sites (they gotta make money as well). i buy now bc i know price will continue to increase, and to think that a jumbo will eventually be over 6K before tax just makes me nauseous..... :wtf:

Those who say that Chanel bags are a good financial investment are those who are providing an over optimistic projection (ahem, i.e lie) to their stingy DH to justify their Chanel bag purchases. lol. Unless you bought the bag at least three or four price increases ago and it is in very good or excellent condition, you will not get what u paid for back if you sell through consignment. Period. The worst resale value is the reissue and seasonal bags unless they are super sought after bags. It's all about popularity and rarity, i.e. Econ 101 ==> Price is determined by demand and supply.

Some bags are easyier to get now,so people arent prepaired to pay over the top prices.Ive never lost on a chanel bag, only ever got more back. But mainly because i started buying pre,to price increases.I hqve bought recently, but now buy what i likem,i dont stick to just chanel.2007 to 2015 ,i owned over 20 chanel bags, but all were bought between 2007 to 2010.recently i paid 3760 for a jumbo, but i love it,and 2540 for a coco handel.im 100% sure id get my money back on these,at the current price of the time.but i would not buy to try gain money later on.Also i hqve only sold to mainly usa, where prices are higher, and ive sold at uk price.I dont belive in charging more then retail for a bag in perfect condtion.other brands,i onlynbuy if discounted in some way, wheather via points ,outlet..my two birkins i sold in 2010,i did make more money on,but again,i sold via usa reseller.bags i dont want at present, ill sell myself, but for the same sale price i paid for them no more

Sorry for reopening this thread but I just came across this on Google search while trying to decide if I should sell my preloved CF flap and buy a brand new one in store which has just become available, and found so much valuable information on here! A year and a half on from the last post on this thread, Chanel has had a recent price increase (again!) and honestly, searching for this particular CF model in the M/L size has become a bit of a saga for me.. I narrowly missed out on one in the boutique recently so started looking in the preloved department for one and Lo and behold, actually found a 2010 model in good condition and bought it (saving about 35% off the current retail price). Then Guess what, just today, my SA suddenly rings me and says another one has landed in the boutique and I can buy it. Now I have a dilemma - do I pass on the opportunity to buy a store fresh one and sell my new-to-me preloved one (I did find a corner that is slightly scuffed and the threads holding the inner flaps slightly loose from usage, as well as a small crack on the inner snap button, which were not disclosed to me by the seller after the item arrived in the post...which is not exactly a pleasant surprise..) ? Or do I keep the preloved one and pass on the store fresh one?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated=) Many many thanks.

Thusfar I haven't sold a Chanel item at a loss. I have sold all of them myself though so no consignor fee. Typically have mainly owned classics and some vintage, some preowned, some were new purchases. I remember that bronze reissue that I fell out of love with and then Jessica Alba was photographed with it and it almost doubled after that pic started circulating. Or the classic flap that was $1650 new and sold for $3000. The profits definitely helped to finance the Hermes habit when that started. Didn't buy to resell or make such profits but that was what the market allowed at that time.

Love that bag in your profile pic. What is that?

I try to buy pre-loved. It’s already taken the hit for depreciation. Though for item that are really “new” to market, you have to buy new. It is a tough pill to swallow though, $6k to $2700. It’s a shame you have to sell!

I agree. I read somewhere too on the internet whilst doing a google search that the resell value of certain bags are not as good as others. In addition, some you tubers also advise reselling them through private selling platforms rather than through consignors cos they take anywhere between 30-50% cut from the final sale price. Hope this helps=)

Question, I have purchased Chanel bags as I love them and some of them I use every day others just sit on my shelf. I think that I have always looked at them like they were an investment. What is everyone seeing on the Preloved market? It appears that Chanel bags are not moving as quickly And does not seem that they are that sought after any longer. Would love to know everyone’s thoughts on this.
