Do bags make you a target for theft?

My first Gucci, given to me by my mom, was stolen at a restaurant as we had dinner. I was at a local restaurant in a nice suburb with very little crime ,and I think the famiiar and then popular Gucci logo is what got my bag taken.

Most of my bags aren't logoed or common styles, so 99% of people aren't going to know what they are.

I worry about that, too. I was in Chicago for a convention a few years ago, and I did some shopping on the last morning before checking out of the hotel and heading to the airport. The hotel was a couple of blocks from the El station (or terminal, or whatever you call it, I can't think of it). I had bought some expensive perfume and was carrying it in the store bag. I didn't want to look like I was carrying something expensive, even though it was in a good area, so when I got off the el, I took the perfume out & put it in a less expensive store bag, and stuffed the expensive store bag in the trash. People were sure looking at me strange--it made me think they thought I was a thief!

Edited to add: Oh, sorry! I just realized you didn't mean store bags! :shame:

It depends. Some people don't even know anything about bags being designer and stuff while other people do. Some of my friends have never heard of some of the designers so they wouldn't even think that it cost so much.

I have had my wallet stolen from my purse twice on Muni when I used to carry cheap a** bags, but other than that, I have never had any incidents with my purses. Granted, if I am going to take either Muni or BART, I won't carry one of my bigger bags--I'll just carry a wallet or pochette. If I drive, I'll carry one of my more expensive bags.

During the day I carry a YSL Muse II I got from TRR (preloved, of course). I like how it holds everything but is a medium/smallish size. I also like how it is a designer bag but doesn't scream logos, especially for work. At night or when going out I do love to carry my LV Sarria Mini in Damier Ebene print. Due to its small size, it holds my essentials (pm agenda, coin purse, key cles, toiletry pouch, phone, keys, mini hairbrush) and I just put a crossbody chain on it and wear it all night because it is not heavy at all. I can swing it in front of my body and keep my hands on it when walking down the streets at night. I feel much safer wearing DE rather than Mono because I don't have to worry about the leather, and in a world where everyone else wears monogram, I like damier ebene. I feel much safer with a small designer crossbody at night than a larger top handle bag like a speedy.

I think in some areas criminals know brands and therefore also know who to target.
This is one reason I don't like heavily branded products. Where I live getting robbed or pickpocketed is very unlikely but I still like to carry a bag that isn't wide open. When I travel I usually carry either a Pacsafe backpack with small locks on the zippers or a LC LPC tote. Both are very hard to get into.

I've not had a problem with bags being stolen, ripped from grasp, etc.
But that's NO REASON not to live in paralyzing fear. Of using anything I own.
Even toasters can be taken. Not to mention cars, jewelry, gum & ballpoint pens.
Holy f***, EVERYTHING makes me a theft target!
Even having 2 kidneys.
:panic:

Best to hide in an underground bunker, no doubt.
The tinfoil hat should save me...

Old thread revived

It is 2019 so the bad guys know bags and watches.

When I was living in not so safe cities, I splurged on rtw and shoes because I have not heard of people robbed of their clothes while wearing them; and carried a beat up old birkin, a Loro Piana tote and bolides. No bling, no watch.
Seldom crossbody while walking in certain cities well known for grabbing your bag from their speeding motorcycles and people have been hurt because they get dragged onto the street in heavy traffic, that is until the bag's strap breaks.
