First, I am not sure there is a "wrong" decision in this case as both rings are beautiful. I would choose the emerald cut because I think it has more presence on your hand and I appreciate the contrast between the melee and the step cut center. But as I said, you can't go wrong with either.

this is a tough one bc they both look gorgeous on you.

But, I think I like the emerald a bit more...because from the pictures, I like the contrast of the halo stones with the emerald, as it defines and shows off your center stone more...and it is more modern, unique to me.....

When I looked at the photos of them on your hand, when I saw the emerald cut I immediately thought, "that's really pretty." It just looks so great on you and is so lovely. Congrats on your engagement.

I like the shape of the oval on your hand, but I don't love the size of the stones in the halo/shank on either. I feel they dwarf both center stones significantly. Might I ask where you're looking for these? I'd be curious on pricing and stats, and I am curious if you've compared to online vendors just to see price and quality wise if they're on par.

Thank you so much for all of the kind advice! We went back today to get modeling shots to give you all an idea of how they would look. The oval is .75 ct and with surrounding diamonds is 1.50 CTW. The emerald cut is 1.00 ct and with the surrounding diamonds is 2 ctw. Here are the modeling pics. Both look great on you! Have you tried a cushion cut? Depending on the ratios it could be a nice balance between the oval and the emerald.....

Also are those the center stone sizes you're considering? I'd be curious to see what a 1ct oval looks like in comparison to the 1ct emerald.

Tough but fun decision to make - enjoy!

No I don't mind saying. Both are part of the Neil Lane collection at Kay's. I have not compared vendors as this was a complete surprise but DBF did mention Tiffany's and Cartier if I really wanted to change my mind (the emerald cut is close to 9k and I could go to Tiffany for a similar design if I really insisted). I am completely open to suggestions and advice. You all have been a great help so far and I appreciate it.

Thanks so much for the input everyone. The SA suggested I let everything sink in and DBF will go back Monday to put a deposit in on the special order so I still have a couple of days to make up my mind.

I think you'll get a better quality ring and stone if you go elsewhere. That's just my opinion though. Not knowing your total budget, I just went to Blue Nile and put this together. You'd need specs on each stone you looked at for fair comparison, but here's just an example for about 10.5K.

Just a rudementary search on Blue Nile for higher clarity and a G Color Emerald cut, for example (you'd want photos of this, which you'd need to request)
(~$8400)

with this plat setting (holds up better over the long haul) (~$2k)

Thanks so much for the suggestions. By any chance, are there any places in the Diamond District that you would recommend? DBF is from NYC and his Dad is telling him he could get his money's worth there.

You could check out ID Jewelry or Engagement Rings Direct, both vendors I would trust to give me a quality diamond (there are no "deals" on a good quality diamond, just FYI) or on Long Island you can visit Good Old Gold (Massapequa Park).

Since you're looking at fancies, there's not really a set mark for well cut standards. For emerald cuts you want a higher clarity stone though (VS1 or so would be sufficient), because the way those are cut, inclusions are harder to hide. Body color in larger emerald cuts is also more visible, but not always a bad thing. What you want to pay attention to is that the facets are straight. You want those steps to be perfectly straight. Not wonky. With Ovals you want to make sure that there's not a bad "bowtie" effect. Those tend to also show more body color in larger sizes, as a lot of stones cut that way tend to do (like radiants). You often see fancy colors in ovals, radiants and sometimes cushions for that very reason, their color becomes more pronounced because they're not often cut for light return in the way something like a round brilliant is. Inclusions are often hidden better though, so a nice SI1 could work to your advantage there.
