We went shopping together, sort of because we had to... I was married before, and didn't know what I was going to do with my old ring. Once my current fiance and I started talking about marriage, I called the store that sold the first ring and asked if they had any program to buy it back or exchange it. Long story short, they ended up offering 3 times the amount in store credit that they would pay in cash, so we to the store together, since I had to bring in the old ring. We both ended up falling in love with a rare, gorgeous radiant cut yellow diamond ring, so we knew it was meant to be that we ended up at that store! Plus, I ended up with a "better" ring, because DF was already prepared to spend a certain amount, plus he had the store credit. It wasn't the most surprising or romantic way to obtain an engagement ring, but it worked out perfectly for us:)

i voted yes but thats not strictly true ... i had dropped many hints on the fact that i really wanted a princess cut so he proposed to me with a princess stone (larger than i thought id get but not large by TPF standards :p
Anyways, once i got over the shock and amazement we went to a jeweler and had it set (lucida inspired) ... i think that it was the best way to do it (def cheaper to buy via a diamond trader and not from a B&M place) but the best bit is that he actually really liked the princess cut out of all of them too so i feel like he picked it.

I clicked yes but I really picked the diamond out all by myself. I first told my darling fiance that I want to pick out my ring, he argued that it took out the romance part of the proposal. I have to agree it does. We looked at bunch of stores in Greece (where we both live) and I decided I could get a better price with one the pricescope vendors in New York (where I am from) so I flew into New York and picked out my ring and than I when I came back to Greece I gave my darling fiance the ring and he proposed on our three year anniversary in Mykonos which is the first Island we to that weekend three years ago. I really thought he was going to propose when we to Italy two months before but he didn't.

Yes - there's NO WAY I would have let DH pick out something that I'm wearing daily on his own! Even with a single style, there are too many variations if you want to want better clarity and sacrifice some color, etc... that I would not be comfortable having him decide.

Yep. I knew a lot more about diamonds and am generally the more straight forward talkative person in our relationship. He greatest fear was that he would choose the wrong ring so he wanted me to be apart of the process. It was quite the experience and a lot of fun!

The engagement was a complete surprise so I didn't play a role in picking the ring but, he knows me really, really well and my engagement ring is absolutely perfect for me.

No. I was living in FL & he was living in HI at the time he went ring shopping.

I have to say he did a GREAT job & I love it. I don't think I could have done a better job if I had picked it out myself.

For those of you already engaged or married, did you go engagement ring shopping before you were engaged? If so, was there a ring that you just fell head over heels for?

Or if you did not help shop for your ring, did you love what he chose for you?

It's a lot of money, and I want to make sure I love it since I will keep it for the rest of my life. At the moment, I don't want to see myself upgrading in the future.

I'm so overwhelmed - any tips or favorite websites for ideas?

My husband and I never looked at rings together, or even talked about rings, before he proposed. The proposal came way out of left field, so it was a complete surprise. I like the idea of the man picking out the ring by himself. Why would I want to pick out my own engagement ring? I love my ring, and I don't ever plan to replace it or upgrade.

we didn't shop together but i did point him in the right direction. i thought doing that might be tacky but i figured if he's going spend a lot of money, i might as well get the ring i really want.
