Did anyone hear the "Bagging a Birkin" story on NPR's Planet Money?

The gender inequity element is deeply annoying, and I say good for our members for recognizing it amd calling it out as the nonsense that it is. As in so many arenas, if a man does it he's a hero, if a woman does it there is something wrong with her. :nono:

Thank you, hopingoneday, for opening this thread. I agree that the podcast is quite misleading in inflated price just to get the listeners' attention. It is quite a cheap ploy imo. The reporter's opinion that she thinks the bag is ugly is just an opinion of a regular girl who doesn't own a Birkin. Who cares? For me, it is just like when my friend told me that her 12-years old daughter thought Hermes Kelly was ugly and looks like old ladies' bag and she asked if I was offended. Not at all.. Ask monkeys if they think diamond is beautiful or not, you might get a similar response (I didn't say that to my friend though:) )

I think in order to appreciate Hermes, one needs to use their products for a little while and appreciation will grow over time. It needs an acquired taste. Although I own only Kelly and Constance bags and not Birkin since I prefer smaller bags with shoulder strap, I think Birkin bags are very pretty. I totally understand why Wednesday Martin thought she was a sucker for buying a Birkin bag. I have felt the same way when I bought my first Kelly but after using my Kellys for a while my appreciation toward Hermes grew more.

However, other things mentioned in the podcast are quite similar to what I learned from this forum. My SA also told me to buy "lifestyle items" if I want to be on the list for B and K. I was not offended at all. On the other hand, I did appreciate his honesty and continue to buy what I like from him.
Happy new year to you all!:smile1:
