Diamonds by the yard...Why so expensive?

Thanks, SASSC...I don't have any modeling pics, but I could try to take some tonight. I also wear the puffy heart on a YG links 16" chain...like the contrast of the YG/WG together, very different look. Since it's an enhancer, it can go on most types of chains.

I have a question about the DBTY necklaces - what are your opinions of the diamonds being set in sterling silver? Would it be better to purchase them in PT/YG?

Sassc...here is my "puffy" heart with the DBTY necklace and a 14kt link necklace.
Forgive the awful iphone pictures. LOL!

Thanks so much Skyqueen!!! It looks so nice on both chains, two totally different looks! I didnt realize it was an enhancer. Thanks for sharing, I would love to get something similar. You have such a great collection. Sorry to hijack this thread.:smile1::smile1:

My pleasure...if you need any info, PM me.

It's one of my favorite collection from Tiffany. I have a bracelet from DH and I love it. I love it so much mainly because I got it all by surprise. I agreed it's expensive for the amount of diamond you got. In fact, I would never have got it for myself but glad DH did. Anyway, one of my diamond were missing after I worn my bracelet for about 11 months. I took it back to Tiffany and they replace it for free. SA was so surprise about that. The SA told me it's supposed to be one of their most secured design.

Hey kohl, mine's in silver and I haven't had any problems with it so far. I know silver tarnishes but it actually looks more 'white' than my platinum pieces .. my platinum just looks grey!

platinum has that characteristic. thats the way its supposed to look :) I can always tell which is which when i wear my silver and platinum dbty together, I much prefer the platinum version, the bezel is finer and I find it show off the gemstone/diamond better

Ostensibly you are paying for Elsa Peretti's original design as well as materials, labor, and of course, the legendary Tiffany markup. T&CO actually has reasonable prices for diamonds anywhere from .2 to about .5, but larger than that you see steep markups, and anything below .2 you're paying substantially for a .03 or .05 rock with less facets than a traditional RB and no certificate.

For several reasons you're going to get a better price if you buy an "inspired" version online from stores such as BlueNile or Whiteflash as opposed to having one commissioned at a brick-and-mortar retail store. Keep in mind that nothing will have the exact same proportions for the bezel setting or chain that the original T&CO has.

Part of the DBTY appeal is that it changed the way people wear diamonds and gold chains, especially from the heavy gold trends in the 70's when it debuted. It is also on of the most versatile necklaces ever created and looks amazing layered with just about anything. It's a jewelry staple now, with tennis bracelets and pearl earrings.

I have to ask all of you jewelry gals...why are the "diamonds by the yard" so expensive??

My DH got me Paul Morelli diamond by the yard style necklace, bracelet and earrings for Christmas. It is actually the Paul Morelli Stone and Chain collection and I like it even a little better than the Tiffany version so I put these on my Christmas list. But I have been debating and overthinking whether to exchange them for something else.

They are all so small and delicate for so much $$. Just doesn't seem like much "bang for the buck"! The necklace.... 16" with 9 .1 carat diamonds for almost $4,000. The earrings, I do love bc they are different. The bracelet is so tiny with 5 .1 carat diamonds and probably less than a 1/4 ounce of gold for over 2,000? All together three tiny pieces of jewelry for almost $8K (I could get a Birkin for that :graucho:).

But, I do like them and when I looked at the Tiffany pricing, it is not out of line with these...it just keeps leaving me asking why this style is so much for such little carat weight and gold.

What do you think?? Are they worth it? ]]

Thanks for the perspective....I really do understand the "Tiffany effect"....but my my question here is bc these are not even Tiffany and just as expensive. I thought maybe there was something particularly time intensive about making this style (just trying to find a way to justify more than $8K for three tiny pieces of jewelry :graucho:).

Thanks agin for all of the input...reading it has made me appreciate the timeless style of them more.
