^^I like the little ones {called bullets} personally as I can't stand the way it looks to see a plastic disc behind the ear of fine jewelry.

My studs are a full carat each and don't pull forward at all, maybe because they're martini settings{?}
They do have the discs as well though, I know people like them.

I like them because they're SO much tighter than the metal ones {friction backs} that come w/ earrings, you really have to work them on, there's no way they'll slip off accidentally.
Thanks swanky!! I am going to go buy the ones you use and see if they will work for me--I agree about plastic discs behind fine jewelry:tdown:

Gorgeous studs.

I used to be strictly screwback, until I was wearing my very expensive studs and one of the screwbacks came off. It was a good thing I was being very cautious, with checking them ever so often..or I would have lost one.

Interesting. Never had a screwback move an inch on me. I screw them all the way down until the "screw" rests against my ear and that's exactly where i find them when i take off my earrings at night (i never sleep with earrings on). Oh well...

Thanks socal--I am also very careful--I continuously check to make sure they are tight--I used to sleep with my studs in but I stretched/tore the earring holes so bad I had to get my ears repeirced--I used to have a second hole to wear to earrings in each ear--back in high school--so now I am very careful to take my earrings out every night otherwise I am going to have swiss cheese for ears:p

Hi
Need some help--does the price of $10,000 sound right for a pair of diamond studs with the following specs: 2.71 ctw, g-h, SI2, premium cut, EGL--I know EGL can grade lower than what they truely are but these babies are stunning--the sparkle like crazy--I will try to post pics but what do you think?

I'm always skeptical with EGL (sorry I'm trained GIA) but occasionally they are on the mark with their grading specs. Usually they tend to overgrade a bit. I think the price sounds about right if that's actually what you're getting. To be completely honest with you, on about 90% of stones I've looked at, SI2 for EGL is almost always a GIA I1 or even sometimes an I2. It mostly depends on the type of inclusion and where it's located. Can you see any inclusions with your naked eye (no magnification)? If not, then it probably is SI2. If you can see inclusions, well then the price needs to be adjusted accordingly. That's a huge price point difference.

What really matters is if they meet your expectations. If they look beautiful to you and have the specifications you are looking for, then go for it. Have you done a lot of price comparisons with stones that are similar in carat weight, color, and clarity? That could help you make up your mind too.

I agree with those that say to get screwbacks. If I was going to invest $10,000 in earrings, I wouldn't want to loose them and even though screwbacks aren't a guarantee, they can definitely help.

Let us know what you decide. Good luck!!!

Thanks Mariah--nope can't see any inclusions--and I am extremely picky about inclusions--even though tiny inclusions in earrings wouldn't bother me since they are earrings the cut and color are killer! Im going to try the claire's backs first just haven't been able to get them yet--if they don't work I will probably go back to screwbacks.

gorgeous studs!

i have screwbacks on mine and don't like how it takes SO MUCH TIME (ok its really not that much time but i always tend to put my earrings on as a last minute thought type thing), but i guess it is nice knowing they won't fall out

I have screw backs also and I do feel they make the earrings more secure although yeah, I do agree they can be a pain to get used to at first but honestly when you get used to it you get a little quicker at screwing them in and knowing when they are fully and securely screwed in. Also, screw backs do loosen up so have a jeweler tighten them every so often. Sometimes new screw backs are so tight that they are tricky to screw and unscrew...mine were like that at first but they loosen up over time.

Although screwbacks are safer, they're no guarantee. My mother just lost one of her diamond studs in spite of having screwbacks. I've helped her look everywhere, but it's gone and poor mum is -->

Screwbacks can spin off in the shower. They are no guarantee. Best bet is a really tight clutch/butterfly back. If it's hard to put on, then it's hard for it to accidently come off. When I worked in the business, I heard too many sad stories about screwbacks. Of course, you'll need to insure them too!

 Thanks, it was hard. . .
my Grandfather gifted a beautiful Chief ST. Joseph Pendleton blanket frm a Pawnee-Creek Indian woman my Grandmother had mentored and it had the most moving letter attached to it about her being a warrior and the journey and circle of life. . . unbelievably poetic and deep.

sigh

Back to bling!

My husband just bought me a pair of diamond studs (in October, for my birthday). They cost $10,000 exactly. They are 1.81 ctw weight, H color, VS2 clarity, AGS0 (Ideal cut), Hearts and Arrows. I hope that helps you get some idea of what can be had for $10,000.

If I were you, I would hang on a bit and comparison shop. The earrings you are considering MAY be exactly what you want. But you don't know unless you look around. Right now, it's a buyer's market for purchases like this, as most people are not shopping for non-necessities at the moment. With $10,000 you can get a lot, and you can also bargain (mine should have cost more than they did). Everybody is different and maybe you really want as big a size as you can get, but I personally would hesitate about going with the EGL lab. Even if this is a case where the usual thing about the 'soft grade' does not apply, if you ever want to resell the earrings, the EGL lab thing is not going to be in your favor.

I could have got larger earrings than I decided to--you can get up to 2.30 ctw for $10,000 with a lab certification from the AGS or GIA if you go down in color and clarity from what I wanted and if you don't do the Hearts and Arrows (which is overkill, but I wanted it). It's probably better to get an I or J color from the AGS or GIA than to get G from the EGL. And SI2 in earrings is fine. (I personally wouldn't go with I1's).

You may want to get this particular pair of earrings in the end, but it won't hurt to check around first. I spent a month looking for mine and got EXACTLY what I wanted. Trust me, if this guy has another pair for a friend, this is not a one-time deal that is going to go away. I don't really trust one-time deals that are going away--there's usually some reason the person making the sale wants you to rush and not think too much.

Mine have butterfly back, by the way. I didn't wnat screwbacks. I have a bracelet that closes with a screw and the threads on the screw very quickly wore down and the bracelet got loose. the bracelet is 22k so maybe it wore down quickly because it's soft, but I still don't think screwbacks would be as secure.

Good luck and I hope you get exactly what you want.
