You do need to see them in person, but there's no point in seeing something with terrible specs. Either they don't have access to quality, well cut stones, or they're not trying.

Thanks Ame! Can I ask a stupid question as I am new to diamonds. Why is the BGD back closure better than the cage? It would seem that the cage would use more hold and be more expensive. Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to learn and understand better. Thank you so much for all your help!

So, look at the side and back of this thing compared to the side and back of that hideous creature they are pushing on you.

You will notice that this one is super open, and that the diamond can get light from almost all around it. It's cast and or crafted from wire vs a stock die-struck mounting that is mass-produced which is what this one looks like because most likely they're just plucking something from a stock catalog and are looking for THE cheapest thing they can find to put your stone into. That just looks like some stock Stuller thing.

In that case, I would actually go for the fixed version. The tiffanys pending setting encircles the stone and is completely open to the back. Maybe the reason why tiffanys chose this setting was to give the diamond more sparkle!

I had no clue, that the flipping and sliding of the DBTY solitaire can become really annoying.

Does anyone regret having bought the DBTY solitaire because of the sliding/moving?

I like the bezel setting, but I also like how my bean-pendant always stays in place because it can move.

I am at the point where I try to figure out if a pendant with a less attractive setting (=non-bezel) might be the better choice?
... for 0.5ct

The blue nile pendant looks massive with its 4 prongs. I'd prefer a smaller setting and love the thin necklace from Tiffany's.

Please tell me that the DBTY-fixed-setting is absolutely fine and that the sliding and moving is no issue. ;-)

So, for me the fixed setting of the dbty is beautiful and gives the diamond a really nice sparkle. It is true that you sometimes have to adjust the pendent so that it lays in the front again, but for me this is not an incredibly annoying thing. Also, I have quite a small diamond pendent, because I really wanted a super dainty necklace, and because it was the first little gift by my fiancé when we just got together and I didn't want something really expensive. So, if you choose 0.5 ct, it is possible that the diamond stays in place as it is heavier than the closure in the back. In my case, the closure seems heavier than the pendent itself which could be the reason why the back sometimes slides to the front!

Dear @LilySa thank you so much for your helpful insights. I am getting closer and closer to "the truth". Not far from knowing what is right for me.

Every pendant, bean included, moves around on me, so I just assume I will be adjusting whatever it is.

I visited a local goldsmith/artisan in Vienna, years ago I bought my diamond studs there, custom-made. I was invited to pick "my" diamonds before they put them in the setting. The pendants they have are superbe! Very delicate bezel, it moves in the necklace. The other settings are more avantgarde but I will opt for the classic bezel. The back is the half of a round sphere. The pendant dangles in a pleasant way. It does flip but moves which draws the attention to the pendant.
The local artisan works with "fair gold" only. Now it is up to me, what quality I wish.
The lady in the workshop suggested a less bright colour, leaning towards the yellow tones, since the stone is going to sit in a yellow gold bezel. Would this be a good idea?

@ame , how low should/could I go, colourwise?

In colour "F" and VVS2 the 0,5ct-necklace costs about the same as the 0,42 VS2, colour "F" at Tiffanys. = I am not going there because of a cheaper price (because he isn't cheaper), but for the design.

I also tried a 0,75ct, too big for my liking for this design.

So. Now the saving begins.

PS: I also went back to Tiffanys. DBTY is not made for me. The whole design is too light.
Maybe I have been wearing my bean (Tiffany) for too long. The bean is quite heavy. I can't deal with the lightness of DBTY.

This sounds amazing to me! I had my engagement ring custom made and my fiance could choose the main diamond, which is also ethically sourced:) Because you had not such a good feeling with the online retailer, I`m sure this goldsmith would be a good option.

sorry - it should say "it doesn't flip" - the diamond always faces the front. When I move intensly, it faces left or right but goes back to centre.

I did not expect to find a matching setting that would match my studs 100%. (the studs are 0,8 tcw)

Does it make you panic like the whole necklace is gone? I know that feeling. But I don't wear any of my stuff really hardly ever so now anything I DO wear I am really cognizant of.

Colorwise...really as low as you want, really. I would probably say a well cut J is a good spot for a pendant though for the majority of people. If it's cut properly, it will face up brightly. But you can go lower if you so choose, yellow gold or not. Whiter metals will call more attention to warmth when bezeled.

Thank you, ame.
Sounds/reads like home stretch, when 2 experts - the goldsmithlady and you - share the same opinion. :-)
I can't follow you when you say "Does it make you panic like the whole necklace is gone?"
Could you please explaine the meaning? Thank you!

You said "the whole design is too light." That the DBTY is too light vs the Bean, meaning you cannot feel it on your body, I presume. I am gleaning from that that it's lightness bothers you because you don't feel it on your body and it makes you uncomfortable thinking perhaps you've lost it.

I see! Thank you for explaining.
The lightness is the beauty of DBTY, it's just not for me.
Oh my, I sound like those men who want the heaviest Rolex available, so they can feel it.

Truth is: I got accustomed to the weight of gold, resting on my chest.

Can speak re BG DBTY:
- No regrets, even though it is annoying that it slides.
- I hardly ever take it off and just fix it about every hour or so.
- My size is .35 but my mother's is .5 and it stays in place without sliding. Although, it still flips but goes back in the correct side on it's own.
- DD has the one that looks like Blue Nile and the setting takes away from the diamond.

I posted a review back in March w pics regarding it.

So, I cannot say that there is no issues w mine but not enough of an issue to not wear it. If I would change things, I would have gotten the .5 for a few hundred more.

Also, purchased DBTY bracelet by BG and love it, too!
