Diamond (jewelry district) vs. Colored Gemstone (Tiffany Legacy) E-Ring?

LeeMiller - thanks, I read somewhere that tanzanite is quite a soft stone and agree that it's probably best to not wear as an everyday type ring. It makes me sad because the tanzanite is perhaps my favorite!

I went into Tiffany and saw a 1.70 tanzanite in a round diamond halo setting for $5600. I wanted to buy it right then and there, but it unfortunately looked too much like a cocktail ring and didn't have the scintillation, shine, and brilliance of a diamond. I think I'm sticking to diamonds - but I've changed my mind entirely and have gotten Fancy Yellow Fever!

Lanas & evekitti - I think I'm still young and in love with the idea of having a Tiffany's engagement ring. I guess I've watched too many movies and have too many silly romantic ideas in my head!

:p

I know what you mean, I've been there too, and I bet we all have been enamoured with the little blue box at one point of our lives or another.

The yellow diamond ring from Tiffany is gorgeous, and I think it'll make a pretty unusual and special engagement ring. Personally I am not a fan of yellow diamonds but I have seen the ones at Tiffany and I agree they're very good quality. Do post a reveal when you've decided!

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but here's my take. I love the idea of yellow diamonds, and I was pretty obsessed with getting a yellow eternity band for awhile, but when I try them one, I just don't see the sparkle that I see with white diamonds.

I didn't try any eternity bands on, but I did try a halo ring and the cushion center sparkled a lot and had a lot of fire (maybe because it was IF?). Granted, I didn't have a white diamond next to it for a comparison, but maybe I'll do try that when it comes closer to buying time. :D

There are many reputable jewelers in downtown LA that carry GIA certified diamonds, especially located in the 550 building on Hill. Basically you can get the same 1.5 ct, VS1-2, F-G-H at way less comparing an identical weight, color and clarity at Tiffany. You can use the extra $ saved toward your future wedding plans.

Ah weddings. . .something I'm not looking forward too! Yes, I think it's important to save money, and that's why I'm not going to try to blow the whole budget on just a ring. The rest of the money we're planning on saving will be towards a bigger house/retirement =) Maybe kids?

Thanks evekitti! I will surely do so!

Kohl, check out this website if you're really thinking about getting a yellow diamond http://diamondsbylauren.com/

They carry GORGEOUS stuff (and they are very reputable and will take returns) priced much better than Tiffany. I'm not saying you shouldn't get the Tiffany if you love it, but check this out to see what other options are out there and to educate yourself about fancy colored diamonds.

Just as an example, this ring is 1.5 cts and cheaper than the Tiffany: http://rockdiamond.com/index.php/je...ellow-cushion-cut-diamond-stunning-ring-r3619

Just keep in mind that you will pay 2x the price for certified stones. You would be better off to buy from a good, trusted jeweler and send your diamond off to GIA yourself. Just FYI.

I totally, wholeheartedly disagree with this. If a stone isn't certified, there's a reason. No reputable "trusted jeweler" sells uncertified stones.

Agreed. I would never, ever buy a stone that was not certified. However, I would never spend the money for a branded ring. The workmanship on a branded piece of jewelry is the same as a fine jeweler w/o the brand name.

Wow, what a beautiful ring and a wonderful site! I just spent the past hour looking through their rings and I love how detailed the pages are on the rings - not only do they allow you to view certificates and closeups of the rings, they also have videos! Even with all that, I am, however, decidedly nervous about buying rings online, even if there is a return policy. I'll show the website to my boyfriend :smile1:

Thanks again for the referral!

Oh, I didn't mean specifically eternity bands, I just meant I don't find yellow diamonds as sparkly as white. Sorry to be confusing.

Oh don't be! Maybe I just confused myself, haha. Perhaps the yellow saturation of the diamond hides the fire/scintillation that white diamonds normally have? But I never thought yellow diamonds would be less sparkly than white - perhaps I'll have to look at both as a side-by-side comparison. The lighting at Tiffany & Co sometimes plays tricks because everything there glitters like crazy!

A lot of jewellers place LED lighting in the display cases (my Tiffany boutique does) and that's why the diamonds sparkle like crazy. I've compared a Tiffany diamond side by side with a Lazare under normal lighting and the Lazare clearly outshone the Tiffany.

As for the yellow diamonds, there's a reason why some are more expensive than others. I believe Tiffany carries mostly fancy intense yellow, and they're way more expensive than the light yellow ones. Also when you're trying on a yellow diamond ring, you might want to examine the mounting. Sometimes jewellers place a yellow gold mounting at the base of the diamond to make the yellow look even more intense.

Enjoy your search. Try on plenty of rings and visit lots of jewellery shops. It's the most fun part of buying jewellery!

kolh_mascara congrats on your pending engagement :) i LOVVVVVEDDDD engagement ring shopping with my now husband.. it was so fun!!!! but i agree with what evekitti says.. and even tho i think that yellow diamond ring above.. with the halo around it on that diamondsbylauren website is a very beautiful ring.. it looks like that yellow diamond is REALLY light.. the yellow diamonds at tiffanys are a really strong fancy yellow.. the more yellow a yellow diamond is.. the more expensive it goes up in price.. personally i think if you're gonna go the yellow diamond route you should get a really intense yellow otherwise.. your diamond could just look like a white diamond that's really yellow kwim?? i think yellow diamonds are super sparkly.. but they look really beautiful with a white diamonds flanking it and really add that extra sparkle and pop!!! :)

Thanks Lisa!!! I was thinking the exact same thing - I want a lot of color and saturation with my yellow diamond! I'll go with a modest size so it won't break my boyfriend's bank haha. We're going to the LA diamond district next Friday to check out a store that sells fancy yellow diamonds and see how they compare to Tiffany. I'm also in love with the halo micropave setting - the contrast of white against rich yellow is stunning! I know I'll be paying a premium but I have my heart set on a blue box . . .

What did your husband propose to you with? =) Do you have any yellow diamonds?
