I wanted a really seamless look so I don't know that I would want bigger prongs, but I think I'd like a bezel. My prongs are really teeny, though.

I'm digging around for a picture that shows the prongs...

Thanks! I'd love to see a picture! I guess my designers concern was mainly for the safety of the point of the heart. I thought diamonds were tougher than anything, but I guess the wrong angle can damage anything....

^^Yikes, my prongs have never given me any problems. I wish I could post pics......have not figured out the process yet.

Ahertz-have you taken to your jeweler to see why they're catching on everything (especially your hair-OUCH.).

Diamonds can most definitely chip, crack and get beat up. I would not want to walking around with the tip of my pear unprotected.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely wouldn't want to let vanity ruin my most expensive jewelry purchase! It's probably not as big an issue with other shapes but pears and hearts definitely need some extra tlc....I will go with the bigger prong. If it really really bothers me I can always have it changed down the road.

Do you think having the diamond raised to just the widest part (the girdle I think) being even to the halo would be okay?

I do but not too high, otherwise the gap created underneath could look weird. Will your jeweler show you the wax before it is cast? Though it's not exact, you would be able to get a general idea how you want your diamond to sit. Also, the prong I have at the tip of my pear is not a v-tip prong - is that what you mean by a bigger/wider prong? The prong protecting the point is just there protecting the point and is not that visible.

I'm going to see the wax on monday. If it weren't for budget considerations I would really want to add side diamonds on the shank along with the engraving...still might do that. He recommends a V-tip prong. I had been leaning towards the smaller prong used for the other two prongs but don't want to do anything to put the stone at risk. Do you think that would be sufficient?

I really do. I have had a 'regular' prong protecting the tip of the pear for at least 4 years now. Not sure if I would like the 'obstructive view' the v-tip might give, I guess the tip of the pear could be considered pointier than that of the heart which is why he's pushing for the v-tip. You need to be comfortable with your choice - ask him how hard it would be to alter should you change your mind. I only work in a jewelry store, I'm not a jeweler and at times what I think would be soooo easy for my jeweler to do, he just looks at me like I'm a nut-job. :D

I LOVE the way it looks in the first picture - and I agree with you - the designs on the side may overwhelm it. I love the beading and the diamonds going around the top and sides of the heart look GORGEOUS. I like how they connect to the diamonds going around the band. Is that the eternity look or just halfway? It may be a little cheaper to just get them halfway (we did that for my wedding band and it saved nearly $1500).

This is a stunning ring. I can't wait to see pictures when it is finished!!!

Thanks! I can't wait to see it either! You know, I was really set on the prong setting so more light would get in, but the more I look at the pictures, the more I like the look of the first picture too. I wonder if prongs could ever be added if I wanted to raise it in the future or if I would be stuck with the bezel setting forever. I am also wondering if the bezel would be a better choice in making it look less engagement-ring like. I just don't have enough experience to know how much it effects the light. I paid a premium for an excellent cut so I would hate to hinder it in any way......Oh I am so torn now!

I agree with you - could that ever be changed in the future if you decided you wanted it to be raised? It seems like jewelers can change almost anything. The way it looks in the first picture is REALLY stunning (I dragged my fiance in to look at it because it is so gorgeous!!).

IMO, I don't think it looks too engagement ring like actually - that might be because it is a heart (and the traditional e-ring isn't a heart). I have a amethyst heart ring I wear on my right hand a lot - so maybe for me heart rings seem like right hand rings :) Perhaps like you said, the bezel setting makes it look less e-ring-like.

It is hard making these big decisions!! I had a hard enough time choosing my e-ring - I can't imagine trying to design a custom ring!!

Yes, but they tell me the entire ring would have to be remade. I've tried to find pictures that show it, but honestly the prongs are so teeny tiny they don't even photograph well. I do like that you don't see them, I just think a bezel would be a little nicer. And more secure.

If it's a well cut diamond light return should be the same on prong vs. bezel.

With all this talking about the ring, I couldn't wait until next week to look at the wax so I ran out there to see it today. I definitely liked seeing it in person vs the cad design. The milgrain is already much less noticeable. I am so excited about the final product-it will be ready next weds. I decided to go with the prong setting but keep it low profile in the prongs. As much as I love the bezel setting in the pictures I'm afraid I would want it to sit a bit higher when it was done. I just haven't had enough experience with bezel settings. I should have tried to find someplace that had a lot of bezel set rings and looked at them. The heart shape has been difficult because there aren't very many out there and whenever I find something I really like it's usually in a round or cushion shape. I will be sure to post tons of pics when she is finally on my finger! Thanks again for everyone's advice.
